Basically, the idea is to actually hit the GROUND below the aircraft, destroying it with the splash damage, much like the ground attacker would do with a bomb to you.

It's overall the safest way to kill a ground-attacker, since you can get in and out without risk of low-altitude planes jumping on you (or getting bombkilled).

 

It's also extremely satisfying.

Thanks, that was cool.  So, is it next to impossible to make a direct hit on another plane?  I got hit once in a light fighter and he was real close to me.

No, it's more than possible. It just takes timing and practice, if you read Rocketspammer's guide on distances you will get a good grip on what distance you should try to get direct hit/air splash damage hits. I would say the majority of my rocket kills are direct hits. Unfortunately I miss more than I hit, lulz.

Radius blast works in the air also. Timers are changed now with a RNG for detonation introduced and I dont think I could pull off another 1100 meter rocket kill now but a few patchs ago it was fairly easy.

The difference between direct hit and hitting the ground is simply that hitting the ground is a lot easier because you don't have to time distance, you just have to lead the target sufficiently. 

 

I.E. You are in a head on, to know when to shoot rockets to hit them with the splash, you need to know exactly how far the rocket travels until it poofs and at what time the plane, who is coming towards you, will be in that area.

 

Shooting the ground, you need not calculate that. Basically, it's as if the rocket automatically detonates when it gets to the right distance.

 

Only works for ground attackers flying <70m.

Splash damage from rocketing the ground worked like a charm for me today. Was thinking of this thread as I let the rocket fly and collected my medal.
