A somewhat forgotten aircraft family is the Yak-25/26/27/28 family. All long retired and none ever used in anger, all these combat aircraft share a similar design in both medium bomber, reconnaissance plane, trainer, interceptor and electronic attack aircraft version.
As early as 1951 development started, as ordered by Stalin, to create a long range interceptor and a reconnaissance plane. This resulted in the first flight of the Yak-120 in 1952 what lead to the Yak-25 ‘Flashlight-A’ (interceptor) and the ‘Mandrake’ (Recce).

Development in 1956 for the Yak-26 bomber ended with only 10 aircraft produced. In 1958 the Yak-121 prototype gave birth to the Yak-27 ‘Flashlight-C’ fighter family wich included the more succesfull Yak-27R  ‘Mangrove’ reconnaissance plane.
The same year the Yak-128s maiden flight gave birth to the Yak-28 family. Introduction started in 1960 and more than 1100 planes built in bomber, reconnaissance, interceptor, trainer and electronic warfare versions.
The interceptors were withdrawn in the early 1980s, but the airframe saw operational use till 1992 as Recce and ECM aircraft when it was finally replaced by Su-24 versions.
