Soko J-22 Orao "Soko"="Hawk"  "Orao"="Eagle" is a Jugoslav strike fighter jet designed by Yugoslavia
INCAS, it's maiden flight was done in 1974 at Batajnica Air Base near Belgrade, with Major Vladislav Slavujević at the controls.
It was a thin engine combat jet for close air support, ground attack and tactical reconnaissance warplane with limited air-defense capability. Posted Image
J-22 Orao was made to replace American F84 Thunderjet with new, more capable aircraft for fire support but also as Romania's wish to improve their aircraft technology, Yugoslav and Romanian factories togeather built J-22 Orao (In Romania it was called IR-93). International premiere for it was on the Paris Air Show. It was compared with English-French "Jaguar" plane that was almost same as J-22, but west didn't want competition, especialy not in the form of a cheaper and reliable plane. So J-22 had to be built with a weaker engine, Viper 632 engine, that made J-22 to have worse characteristics then Jaguar. Maneuvering capabilities improved by adding a chamber for additional combustion. Although J-22 was designed as a subsonic strike fighter, once it broke the sound barrier in a 25% dive above Batajnica airport.

What's the relevance of posting this? This is a thread for aviation from 1930s to 1950s. By your own account this plane didn't make its first flight until 1974.

Clearly this belongs in the 1960-2000 thread.
