Oh yeah. I remember when my P80 dropped. Absolutely not ready for that kind of speed. It gathered dust for quite a while. Common complaint across all WG's titles is you can buy your way in to whatever you have no business playing yet. Unless the entire business model changes (I doubt it) so you have to have a certain number of games and a minimum proficiency in previous tiers before moving up, everybody just has to live with it.

 

In a way Planes has the worst problem because you need T8-10 to complete P3 token missions. The temptation would be strong to just go for it regardless and hope for the best. Ships missions usually start T4 up and don't bracket things out like planes (Usually, there are exceptions).  I only do Tonks about once a year anymore so pay no attention to how they run things there.

Upon reflection, I think this dude is deliberately throwing games.  To get below a 30% win rate, you really have to work at it.  Exactly like you have to work at it to get above 70%.  The game is designed that way.

 I looked at his stats.  A little over 400 battles.  23% WR.  Nothing higher than T4 tech tree. 2nd battle in the P-80A.  I mean, now his win rate makes sense.  If he had been paired with one of the other two humans, it would have been a blowout loss for his team.  I would have never noticed, other than post battle, I'd have seen him in 12th position on red.  If the MM had been a bit more sophisticated, he'd have gotten an all-bot match due to his low time in-plane and low win rate.  Where do you put *that* cutoff?  I don't know.  But throwing that guy into genpop isn't fair to him or to the rest of us, IMO.  He gets his butt stomped, and has no clue why.  We have to carry someone who is literally dragging the team down.....

I agree with you that this player would have probably gotten an all bot battle from a better MM.
But then you have to define the MM rules in a very differentiated - and thus more complicated - way, otherwise Reito, for example, would also always get an all-bot match.

However, I suspect we won't see a change/improvement to the MM in WoWp. 

On the other hand, your player with 23% WR won't care much if he loses in a T2 plane or in the P-80 in T8.

Yeah, and any change you make to the MM, no matter how small, will hurt SOMEONE enough so they'll whine about it.  

 

I really don't want the MM more sophisticated because that will undoubtedly lead to either less humans per battle or longer queue times, or both.

 

There is the other side of the Potato Chronicles,  which I have also experienced.   The side where the battle has reached a critical number of potatoes, so that my play is somehow looking like a superstar in action.

 

I had a few of those battles lately - one in my Bf-109E in my F2P account, not yet elite, got an Ace, Marsailles, Akamatsu, Hero of the Skies, Winged Legend and Kohzedub in a battle where all I did was camp at a central Airbase and F2 my bots around the map.

 

My team mates were so bad that they flipped sectors to red more than a couple of times, and the red team never figured out that they needed to gang up on the Airbase in order to flip it.  It added up to me killing 26 planes, the battle lasting to almost full time, racking up a boatload of tokens and over 25k PP

 

A god in the skies, right?  Well, no.  The red team wasn't good.  The blue team was even worse.  But just me doing my Emil thing like I would normally do all of a sudden looks like WoWP genius.   But it isn't, because of the giant piles of potatoes on both teams.  In the Kingdom of the Blind, the one-eyed man is King.

 

And when the battle is loaded with potatoes, the Prince of Potatoes rules them all.

Last night on the Archipelago map with the central MP.   Human on red in the IL-2.

 

We won the game easily, but after the game I looked at the IL-2's stats - #12 in the game.   ZERO ground targets destroyed, ZERO ground damage, two aerial targets.   I found him orbiting the SW garrison.

 

8 battles, 12.5% win rate (the lowest I've seen, and with only 8 battles one would have to work to get that low, I think).

 

I think he's a Tonks player - he had 4 or 5 aircraft, one being the Bf 109 Z.   Proficiency was zero across the board IIRC.

 

Unfortunately, I had my own potato moment in the game with him.  I was in my Bf 110 E (man, I'm enjoying that plane!) and decided to flagrantly break the 1st rule of heavy fighters and played footsie with him.  And lost.  TBF, I was already on fairly low health but still....that was embarrassing.

 I did see a few joyflying lillydipping hang gliders just floating around the place having a good ol'time and never once had to use thier guns,bombs or rockets.But man-o-man could they ping a map.I was amazed,I had never witnessed such a performance and they was flighted. They both ended with the exact same score 1K each.The only good they did was keeping the bots busy shooting the 2 of them down.

Boom and zoom. GAs generally can't climb for squat, so if they're feeling feisty and thinking they're actually fighters just buzz them with an attack then pull up into a steep climb while pointing your nose in whatever direction their tail is facing. As soon as they spiral themselves into a stall dive back down and finish them off.

Decided to spring for the B29c bundle. My once yearly WG spend some money thing!. Got the pilot/gunner all set up and hit battle. Noticed things I normally one pass, aren't. Reload taking quite a while. Lose and take a look. TOTALLY forgot to put ANY equipment on the plane! Sorry Zig, I F'ed that game up.

There was pain.  The pain of the weight of so many potatoes.  I'm no GAA pilot, but in the majority of my Me-329/IL-20 battles, I was the top-performing pilot on my team.  The amount of humans in battles has been great, on one hand - you can bait humans to do dumb stuff like follow you around the map, while YOUR humans do work.  Or, you get the potatoes who do the following. 

 

A MiG-15 battle yesterday showed me the value of human team mates who at least try.  One battle, it's me and a Ta-183 vs. a pair of human bombers - Su-10 and Ef-131.  It turned out exactly like you'd expect, except my Ta-183 guy was attacking armored ground targets.  [sigh]

The next battle, it was me and Mr. Su-10 and the EF-131 and the Ta-183 on the other team.  That one was a close victory for us, but only because Mr. Ta-183 was still trying to use his plane for GAA work.  It was a cap, cap, cap, cap battle, and we barely won.  Mr. Su-10 wasn't super-great at bombering, but he carried his weight.  I just stayed focused and did nothing other than ABC.  No YOLO, no "targets of opportunity", just ABC.  But without the Su-10 doing the thing that Su-10s do, it would have been another loss.  And the EF-131 pilot?  He got nearly 20k PP in a loss.  He did everything he could, but he just couldn't make up for a Ta-183 pilot who got all of 2800 PP.

In essence, that potato helped cause four losses.  Two of his own, and two for other people.

I did a potato thing this afternoon.   3v3 in my P-82B (that's such a fun plane, BTW), 3 heavies on the other team (spec'd F2H, spec'd Me 262 HG II and P-82B).   

 

I'm carrying a full load of bombs and rockets, and get into a high altitude turn fight against the F2H, but I'm able to turn inside him on each pass and whittle him down.   He gains a bit of separation and set us up for a head on pass.   I let fly with my 14 .50s and we die in a collision.

 

I had 10 rockets under my wing.  I never even thought to let them fly.  I ALWAYS forget about my rockets in head-to-head encounters.  He was low enough on health that a faceful of rockets would have ruined his day and left me to continue without a trip to the penalty box.

 

Maybe I can apply for the position of Court Jester on Corvus' potato court?
