How do you play this crazy awful hateful piece of rotting trash? It sees TERRIBLE MM, in other words, it often enough sees Tier VIs, and even when it doesn't, it's poor even in its own tier, and very vulnerable always. The bombs are just okay, too, not even great. and the upgraded rockets are still not earth-shattering. The 37s ARE great, but it's so hard to get from one cap to another, they hardly get used, and even when they do, they fail to take out targets because you get shot down by literally anything before you have time to take out any mildly armored ground target section. Oh and yeah, it's WAY too easy for a Hurricane IID to take it out, honestly, not to get too much on a sidetrack here, but the Hurricane IID needs to be limited to one shot per gun before it overheats, and probably have 10 times worse dispersion than it currently has. It's not bad enough, it needs to be hard and niche, and almost impossible to use against aerial targets. But I should get back on track. The IL-2 at tier V is just a nightmare to play, I don't understand how to use it at all successfully. Does anyone?

An average player with an average goal: greatness, someday. Today, mediocrity will have to suffice. But no matter, I will always play to the best of my ability, and I will always strive to make the best of my ability just that little bit stronger and better.

Frankly, until you get to Tier VIII, the Soviet GAA line is suffering and death.  I did like the IL-2(t), but the IL-2 and IL-8 were both gigantic hunks of garbage that I sold as soon as I could.  Frankly, I also sold the IL-2(t), because if I am going to pound ground in T6, I am going to use the T6 Pe-2.  And if I want to pound ground in T5, I will use the T5 Pe-2, LOL.

The IL-20 redeems the line up to that point.  Someday, I'll grind the IL-20 enough to get the IL-40, then the IL-40P.  But I don't miss any of the mid-tier planes in that line.

I liked the line after the IL-2.  I kept my IL-8.  I've even been called a hacker in it! lol.  With a good crew the planes take a beating and if you don't go to where the action is you can flip caps easily.  IL-20 is when it gets really good but I still like the line tier 5 and up.

grind past it and bite your lip.

I rarely fly the IL-2 and have never flown the IL-8 pre 2.0

Did not even own the IL- until 2.0

The IL-2 is slow but just avoid the red gang buster up high.

Once you start getting skilled pilots it will become a better plane.

And learn to dogfight in it too.

Once you get past it and on to the IL-40 and P models you wont be disappointed.

the IL2 is a perfectly fine plane

men flew it

they were successful

you can too can be successful

fly it like it's the only tool in your box

attitude is what makes this plane work just fine

.

.

.

or lawn dart and leave a widow

if the pilot's good, see, I mean, if he's really..sharp, he can barrel that baby in so low [he spreads his arms like wings and laughs],

you oughtta see it sometime, it's a sight. A big plane like a '52. VRROOM! There's jet exhaust, fryin' chickens in the barnyard.

Bsh-2 & Il-2 were complete suffering & are perfect examples of why its absolutely ok to sell planes you don't enjoy.

These are never going to be any fun to fly because they're super sluggish & have no tailgunner.

A 1hp light ADA will kill you from full health if you can't flip the cap quickly, get some support or sucker it into a bomb trap.

You do at least get decent guns & the assistance of rockets/bombs to help you with the cap flipping.

Also in T5 you don't have to suffer a huge number of battles before getting to the Il-2(t).

I actually quite enjoy taking the Il-2(mod) premium out.

Its basically just a stock Il-2 -> should be no fun at all but the addition of a little ShKAS tail gunner makes it vastly more pleasant to fly.

C'est magnifique, mais ce n'est pas le SerB.

Play other lines and research your way past it or get the premium.

De-arse your bunks! Man the planes! The Fokkers are in sight! BAM ba LAMMM!

Request support for fighter escort and follow a bomber, let them take the lead while you clear AA on the perimeter, then mop up their targets to flip the point.  Play strategically, as a bomber must, and survey the map when able.  Also, you're going to die so do it outside of cap territory.

It's fine for me. Just cut the flaps when you're shooting and remember to pull up and drop bombs ahead of the targets. Bombs take time to fall.

Everything's stupid, everything's wrong

MGs are too weak and cannons too strong

The ju-87 is simply a waste

xp past the do-17z with great haste

You grind through the pain with the serene knowledge that someday you'll fly the Il-10 and then the Il-20 and finally start wrecking stuff properly.  The "Il-2" models come from the land of misfit toy airplanes.

It helps if you alternate playing them with playing the endlessly fun german GA.

You can't, You suffer through the grind to get enough xp to level up and move on. Only the high tier 7+ GA planes are enjoyable for the most part. Lower tier GAs are mostly cannon fodder hunks of junk. For example, I couldn't wait to get the German Ju 88 P and immediately sell the Ju87 G. A Stuka (from Sturzkampfflugzeug = "dive bomber") without bombs is totally useless. However, the Ju 88 P doesn't have bombs either but with the very long range hard hitting cannon it has flying it is not just an exercise in frustration even though I seldom use it anymore. Now that I've moved up to the Me 265 (flying wing) it's even more enjoyable to occasionally fly and I expect that to be the case as I very slowly work my way up the line. I'm enjoying the German GA planes (tier 6+) much more than the Russian GAs even though I think the IL-20 and higher ground attack planes have better tail guns.

Play sneaky, cap the sides of a map, or anywhere the enemy aren't in force. Wait till you have reloaded to go in, get out. Low and quiet.

It's a tough fly, but a good teacher - it really punishes you for picking the wrong path. It's a different playstyle from the flying tanks you get in to... you are at your best avoiding fights.

Minimap is your best, best friend.

All of this, plus play the IL-2 to its biggest strength: the ability to capture zones in one pass.

Alas, mobility is the weakest aspect of the plane.
