This is true. I started the Japanese mission first to avoid the Kozhedub requirement for now. I might end up buying the Soviet bundle if I can't get Kozhedub at the end.

If I interpret the description correctly, The Russian pilot is only for the specific plane and Japanese pilot can work in other planes. My assumption is based off this:
- Japanese pilot Akira Akane, trained for the Mitsubishi A6M5 Zero aircraft. An inborn samurai, aimed at dealing maximum damage to enemy planes, not only on the A6M5, but also on other Japanese aircraft.

One of the skills works only on a specific plane (the La-5 and A6M5 accordingly), the second one works on any plane of the corresponding nation. Here you can find more details.

it took about 10 hours to get to stage 8 for Akira by playing aggressively. Stage 8 appears to be the largest bottleneck with respect to time:
-- 10,000 capture points @ 250 capture points/battle = 40 battles approx --> 10 min/battle approx = 400 minutes = 6-7 hours for stage 8 alone
If you figure that it will take you 18-24 hours to get Akira Akane, then purchasing for ~$24 (roughly $1 for every hour you would otherwise invest), seems like a good deal. Also, if you can purchase Akira Akane, then go through the missions, that could be a nice way to get all the bonus rewards along the way.

Here is a quick mission overview for both pilots -- which may help if trying to complete both at same time, if that is possible:
^ assume "any number of battles" unless otherwise stated
Akira mission 9 is 10 enemy aircraft in one battle while defending.

Good eye. Yes, there appears to be a disparity between the mission as it is posted online (in the news) when compared to the actual mission in game. See here:

The list posted online (in the news) is different than the one actually in game. It is wrong for Pavlov too:
200,000 damage = 167 stock Javelins or 80 IL-40P's.

Thx for posting this.
I think i'll pass on this one.
I don't fly either of both planes and 20 hours of flying to complete one mission is a bit too much for me.

You do get individual prizes for completing each part of the mission and some of them are worth it in my book even if you don't make it all the way through.

That's my thinking as well. I'm flying almost everyday, so I might as well pick up the prizes that I can, and then buy the pilots at the end. Plus I'll get 10 unique supply crates with the pilots. Win-win in my book, though others may feel different.

Are the pilots only good for their tier? For example the Japanese pilot is for tier 4 but if I move her to another tier in the Japanese line does she retain ALL her attributes for tier 4?

I'm not sure that I understand your message correctly, as pilots and tiers have nothing to do with each other. I mean, any regular pilot works the same on any tier.
One of the skills of these pilots, however, is tied to a particular aircraft. The La-5 for Vasiliy and the A6M5 for Akira, both tier 6 planes by the way, not tier 4. The second skill of each pilot works on any plane of the corresponding nation. Here you can find more detailed information.

Stop trying to defend and play to win.
I feel your pain. Been flying the La-5
My daily mission is 10K PP for defending airfields.
The other daily is 200 AA guns.
The pilot mission is 200K damage to air targets.
It has taken me something like 60 games to get the 10K defending airfield finished.
Not for the lack of airfields but for the lack of me keeping my happy 455 at the airfield,
Plucking away at the AA guns as i can with the LA-5
I got tired of " TRYING " to get things done quickly and just play to win instead of tokens or missions.
Now it is like airfields are in every match, GA ignore AA for me to shoot and the skies are ripe with enemy instead of bots
