Does the VVS P-39Q offer anything that my P-39N offers /other/ than being a Russian crew trainer? Comparing the details shows pretty much every edge in the N's favor, but I do have it specialized with ultimate equipment, so that slews the results a bit.

To my memory, the N is significantly better. I hope I am remembering right that the N's guns hit harder, it can be made to turn better, may be faster. I could be wrong, but that's how I remember it.

That's what it looks like to me. If the Q had a 20mm ShVAK I'd be on it like a fat kid on a twinkie (the 37m can diaf) but the rest of the package doesn't look terribly interesting. I'd also /love/ a proper P-400 (or a P-39D-1 at T5.

Isn't the Q-model just the same as the N-model with the wing mounted MG's removed?

According to the compare tool the P-39q has slight hitpoint, speed, roll & climb advantage.
The cost for that slight performance improvement is loss of the 4*7.62mm MGs, arguably not a huge loss given their small dps & short range but they do give an extra bit of burnination for cutting down a high HP target or when your 37mm is overheated.

The quad 7.62s actually add an appreciable amount of close-combat punch which, in the Airacobra, is much appreciated. I do prefer the N over the Q if for no other reason than its got much more consistent firepower in a brawl. The Q does have those slight performance advantages though on top of having a chrome paint scheme which adds another +3% cruise speed which shouldn't be underestimated
Still, I think the N is just a lot better at its role of a close in brawler
