The P-38F is my staple these days. The gun takes some getting used to bit its really the only part of the plane that takes a lot of getting used to. Once you're dialed in with it, the P-38F is straight up the most dominant airplane at tier 5. The 109E comes in a close second. I would put the Spitfire I in here to to complete the Triforce of Sealclubbing but I won't because I just don't mix with Spitfires for whatever reason.
Funnily enough, I don't really have an opinion on the other planes. The F4F is on the verge of dislike but I played it very early in my flying career so its likely that some of that dislike was just me sucking. All my tier 5 bile is reserved for the ground attackers. I hated the Il-2, found the Stuka tedious and the Duck to be just...a meme. I just basically hate all GAAs below tier 7 and above tier 4

these are great threads, really helpful to new folks, i hope ty, Maqor plus, it gives us a chance to rant
p-38 = most flown, but i've moved on to new interests, and that 37 requires re-retraining after a layoff
love the Emil and the Mig 3, they do everything i ask of them but there's so many fun planes at T5, for all skill levels looking at you, Spit

Like:
P-40 -fast, 6* 0.50 of burnination, ok turn & altitude, iconic chin.
P-38F -speed, altitude, good turn (for a heavy) & somewhat finnicky but strong firepower.
MiG-3 -speed, altitude, good turn & reliable burninating MGs.
Bf109E -speed, altitude, ok turn & powerful bursty 20mm + MG armament.
Spitfire I -powerful 20mm + MG armament, turny & somewhat more mobile than other turnfighters. The classic newbie machine. I only recently re-purchased & Specialised it, didn't massively enjoy maybe should be Neutral.
Hurricane II -not all that quick, not all that turny, limited altitude but its got 4* 20mm.
Beaufighter -I fly it non-Specialist with no turret or ordnance.
Dislike:
F4F -I wanted to like it, I tried, I really did, I specialised it & kitted it out with full Calibrated Ultimate Equipment but it doesn't have the speed or turn to be competitive. Same burninating firepower as P-40. Forced Rocket ordnance when Specialist is annoying, I'd prefer if it could be flown clean or with bombs.
B-17D -weak guns, coverage gaps in all the worst places.
Il-2 -good firepower, no tail-gunner -> frustratingly vulnerable.
Fw190A1 -sluggish acceleration, sluggish turn, mediocre firepower & low altitude limit.
Ju87G -twin 37mm are great for taking out light & medium ground targets but frustrating vs armored & all but useless vs planes.
Ju88A -ugh bomber
Ki-43-II -too slow, too low, too incendiary, not enough pewpew
A6M2 -too slow, too low, too incendiary, not enough pewpew
Neutral:
XP-44 -I actually enjoyed it & think it'd be strong Specialised but I don't like the looks. Same burninating firepower as P-40, big quick loading bombs, fast but doesn't turn great & bleeds speed very quick when you try.
LaGG-3 -my first T5, it felt amazingly fast and powerful at the time after the I-16s, re-purchased recently & working on Specialising it but not particularly enjoying it.
Yak-1 -I had liked this initially, re-purchased it for a keeper but too slow, too low, too incendiary, not enough pewpew.
Yak-7 -Another one I liked initially & I'm working on Specialising now, not having a hugely great time with it yet.
Pe-2 -haven't actually played it.
Bf110E -Breezed through it first time, re-purchased recently to Specialise but haven't got round to flying it enough to form proper opinion, may be really good.
Hs129B -not flown it but given the Ju-87 I can't imagine its great.
Ki-45 -I probably need to re-purchase this, was a rough stock grind but has a lot of potential.

I'll take any chance I get to show the MiG-3 some love, it's just comfortable as hell to fly, and looks freakin' amazing...
I always thought the big flat nose was reminiscent of a muscle-car hood

jeez you were a walking deathstar, back in the day
how is the added pressure of capping sectors, on top of killing every plane in sight? having to manage those two things at once was hard for a bunch of 1.x folks

i hopped over the ki-45 last year to get to the 102 loved it loved it, but a couple of months later, i thought i'd try the 45 and loved it too
so much that i parked the F and ran the 45 until i had it ultimated it was a fun trip the 45 now has a slightly higher 'average kills per sortie' than the 102
i fly it every time i pass through T5 i can't believe that i forgot about it in my earlier post
