It flies like the tier 9 heavies but never has to face the tier 10 bombers.

Sort of.  It still has those f@s#ing MK108s.  You have to make them work.  In that significant respect, it is *not* like T9 heavies.

But yes, the Swallow is probably my favorite airplane in the whole game to fly.

i'll fly it during this weekend's SNL during Ram the Rabbit to get used to it       and some additional training room fights, to get a feel for the 108s again

it seems to be a sniper, with that 2200 meter range?      i can fly a few snipers now that i could not back then       should i equip long barrels? or GOA?

it's beautiful in the hangar, decked out in camo          but i'm determined to loosen up that pretty french gown

The Schwalbe doesn't have sniper-30s.  I've got Long Barrels on mine (and almost every other plane with the weapon option) because I'm not taking ACC penalties if I can help it.  Already a bad enough shot as it is.  Guns listed as 616m effective range, roughly 800m opening range.

qu33Kkc is right - the MK108s have a frustrating lack of range.  If those guns could reach out to 1000m, the plane would be almost untouchable...  Waiting to close to within 550m is painful sometimes.

But if you bring along the A2A rockets you can really teach some folks not to head-on.  :)

With Ultimate long gun barrels the range gets up over 700m which makes it a lot easier.

Any of you XF5U drivers have any words of wisdom? Specifically on how you fly it.

I thought I loved the Pancake, but even after fully researching it out it’s still a bit lackluster. I’m not looking to turn it into a beast of any kind, just any tips for making the last 30-40k in XP grinding to the F2H at least a bit more tolerable/fun.

I tend to fly it like the previous heavy fighters- grab altitude, dive down on points, loose rockets, and pop up to engage aircraft in the point. I think what gets me is either not utilizing its stall speed effectively or trying to rely too much on it? I’m not trying to turn with single engine fighters, but I’m a bit at a loss on disengaging or really putting the Pancakes strengths in play.

Stay high, bully bombers and other heavies.  Save the rockets for vulturing the last bits of ground targets, or alternatively, popping a flak location each to ease the way for your GAA/Bombers.  Standard BnZ tactics on anything further down.  You can outturn other heavies, but don't try it against anything else.  Even post-nerf, it's a glorious bird.

Ditch the ordnance & fly faster, stay high.

You can even outturn MRF, if you use that stall speed.  I got owned in my Dora by a Pancake that slowed way down.  P-47s,  Su-9, Me-109TL, all are food for a slow Pancake.

Thanks for the word of wisdom y’all.

I got rid of the ordinance, and started flying it how I wanted rather than how I thought it should be flown. Picked up a number of victories including a 20 kill (my highest above Tier IV-V) battle, netting me something like 14 medals and achievements including my first Marseille medal.

I love flying, so as a rule I refuse to dislike any planes.  However P-51H is sneaking up on Ta 152 as a contender for my "least liked" plane.  I'm hoping the upgrades make a BIG difference, because although I enjoy going fast the P-51H grind is starting out as among the most painful I've experienced.

Wish i could remember how I voted.  I know I really liked both GAAs, the Spitfire, F2G (though both now starting to look a little long in the tooth) and the Tempest.

Since then I've gone through the YAK-15 - absolute beast once you're in a zone - too slow to travel too far so I could do very well in it but could not help carry a bad team.

TU-10 - was great - up tiered very well and I would suggest was better than the Tu-12, which I'm about to finish (and have enjoyed but it up tiers badly).

J7W1 was great fun though the guns were frustrating - stock very accurate, great range, do bee sting damage.  Other two guns have shorter range, do hurt, but only if/when they hit - too often saw four rounds bracket the target - same issue with the J7W2 though - still very enjoyable to play and capable of giving a Spitfire pilot a surprise or two.

Now just started the flying pancake - Crimson Dawn event battles mean I have no clue what it's like so far aside from the stock guns  not so much doing damage as lightly tapping on the target.  Still enough exp in my first battle to upgrade them.

Player on the EU servers, hence the low number of battles here.

Well I enjoyed it enough to keep after Specialising.

Fully Ultimated out its a bit faster cruise, bit inferior turn to an equivalent teched Vampire but has 900m altitude advantage.

Until then you're gonna only have altitude.
