I was ignominously on the wrong side of a 70% player pulling a massive 30k PP in Javelin the other day, absolutely mighty effort from that guy.

next in line for me would probably be the 94D, but i'm not real excited about it        i see Nue murder folks and take their wallets while flying it all the time, but...

T9 and T10 isn't really designed for folks like me

I did not start flying tier 9 and 10 until I had 20K battles under my belt.

So do not feel bad,

Well, I just got 9 tier 9 planes: F2H, F-94D, Me 262 HG II, Sea Hawk, Me P.1092, MiG-9, Yak-19, and La-160 all this week, plus I've had the F-84B for a couple weeks.

First impressions (using free XP for 1 upgrade on each):

F-84B - Turns well, strong ordnance loadout typical of Republic multiroles, not nearly as fast as I expected. I tend to keep it low hunting ADA, ground targets, and GAAs. It can turn with a lot of enemies. I struggled to keep a quick capping pace when using boost to go up high after ADA heavies, picked up the pace once I started staying lower to the ground and saving boost for traveling between zones. Comfortable, short, and easy upgrade grind.

F2H - Flies like a typical heavy fighter. Guns are moderately strong while still being very accurate. Quick enough if you manage your energy and boost. Don't have the engines yet and it already is capable and fun.

Me 262 HG II - Using the 20mms and second engine so far. Another rock solid heavy after only a few upgrades.

F-94D - Almost a heavy fighter too. Flying it at mostly medium and medium-high altitudes with polished skin. It can escape from tier 9 turn-n-burners by diving even with the stock engine. It's workable but suffers a bit without the top engine. Longer grind.

Sea Hawk - This one is weak out of the box. Intrigued by Rei's advice on playing to its diving and climbing strengths.

Me P.1092 - Strong once it has the top guns.

MiG-9 - Speedy, soaring vertical loops with ease even without the top engine. Short grind too.

Yak-19 - Guns feel very powerful compared to the Yak-15. Can out turn everything from day one.

La-160 - The 37mm guns are a pretty bad fit for a turn-n-burn plane. Slow shell speed, low RoF, and overheat quickly. Top 30mm guns are likely going to feel great by comparison, even if they're only slightly more reliable.

I'm likely to pick up the BVP.212 very soon, as it already has everything but the top engine unlocked. I'm close to the P.228 and J7W2 too, but I might wait awhile due to their long upgrade grinds.

So, only the Sea Hawk and La-160 are disappointing upon purchase, and both have some upside for improvement. The F-94D needs to be played very carefully at first, but at least is already powerful. The others have been nice from the get-go.

Done grinding, now playing favorites:

XP-50, Beaufighter V, Mosquito 26, Beaufighter, P-38J, Bf110E, P-38F, F4U-1, P-47B, Ki-88, IL-1, Bf109B, Bf110B, Blenheim F, Mustang 1A, SE100, XF4U-1, Yak-3RD, A6M3 exp, XP-55, Spitfire V DB, IL-2 mod, A-26B, Me329, IL-20, IL-2, Pe-2 M-82, Do217M, Bf109Z, Ki-93, Ki-84, Vampire, XP-58, P.1056, Tempest, La-9, Me209A

I almost decided based on a short video that I saw that I would pursue the F-94D Starfighter just by looks alone. I then realized it's a multirole and I might want to seek perspective from others who have reached that level to see if there are similar looking but better performing craft. It seems to get good reviews

It is a really good plane BUT it isn't for everybody

Pros:

1. It has a goddamn Vulcan. An honest-to-god 20mm rotary, not the revolvers that everyone else gets.

2. It carries a brace of FFARs which means anyone daring to charge at you head on is liable to eat a faceful of high explosives

3. Its fast and has a good, long boost like all multiroles. Not as long as a heavy, but much better acceleration

4. Did I mention the Vulcan?

5. It gets a gun equipment slot which allows you to slap additional weapons bonuses onto it. A friend of mine has his Vulcan with a range of 1.1km. A 1.1km chainsaw. Let that sink in.

6. Its boost is also good enough to overcome its altitude disadvantage, at least for short periods

7. Handles pretty well. Not insanely well, but good enough that you can pull all the usual stunts without feeling anything

8. Did I mention it gets a Vulcan that can be upgraded?

Cons:

1. Its a multirole, therefore it gets terrible altitude. Not as bad as some, but not anything near good enough to reliably intercept orbiting bombers

2. Its rockets can't be upgraded. Not really a big issue but that does mean they're not always off cooldown when you need them

3. Rockets in general are REALLY hard to use reliably. They're niche gimmicks at best

4. It turns poorly so if you get caught in a dogfight without boost, you're dead

5. It isn't THAT fast, so its rather prone to being caught if you're not keeping your head on a swivel.

6. Vulcan heats up really fast.

7. Stock grind is bleargh. Quad 20s is mediocre at tier 9 and you really feel the lack of maneuverability with them. Weaker acceleration too until you get the top engine which again makes you easy to catch and kill.

What SFMY said.

The Vulcan makes it.

It was a nasty stock grind but I've got it fully upgraded now & enjoying it.

I've actually rebuilt it from speed/turn to full-turn & found it much more handy, it still sprints decently but you can get the gun on target.

I think a bunch of ppl run it full speed build & its entirely possible thats the better option.

it really really is all about that Vulcan. It shreds.

You certainly need trigger discipline but thats relatively easy to learn by the time you get to this plane.

The location of the tailplane really grates though, damn the designers for not moving it either down onto the fuselage or up the tail a bit.

Did I mention the gun?

1. Sweet mother of Hades, I had no Idea what a Vulcan was until I googled it and I am in love

2. How many other jets around this tier get the chrome polished skin?

3. Did you say "orbiting Bombers"? Do you mean that literally? What is a tier X bomber's altitude?  :o

interesting to see that the Starfighter has 9 likes, more than any other plane in any class, as of today      i love mine, and i don't care for MRs at all      cept the Corsairs

i'm still tentative in it, because i don't go T9 very much        it was designed for younger, faster brains than mine

but i get all badassy-cocky whenever i fly my fully-upped Banshee or my fully-upped 1092

Not too many. The Sabre's metallic skin is a standard skin, not a chrome version that grants a cruise speed bonus. The MiG-15bis has chrome, I believe the La-15 also gets chrome as does the Yak-30 though I don't have the latter two so I'm just speculating (they might just have standard paint masquerading as chrome...). The Swift has chrome paint, the 262 and 262 HGII both have chrome but not the HGIII. Banshee has chrome, 109TL has chrome. J8M has chrome (does that count as a jet?), JL-1A-37 has chrome but that's locked behind a special bundle. I don't know if the XF-90 has chrome. It might be like the Sabre and just be a nice silver skin, not proper chromed skin

"Orbiting Bombers", "Space Bombers" or "Moon Bombers" are just terms people use for bomber players who take their planes up to the redline which is around 4000+m at tier 10. At that altitude, they're safe from AA and most interception but also fly at a snail's pace and their bombs fall all over the place. Its generally looked down upon as a playstyle because you can't get to them unless you're in a very select group of highly modified Heavy Fighters while at the same time, they don't actually do much other than sit up there over an important cap point and lay their eggs over and over until the point is captured. Some players can make it work but that's usually in a flight with someone else actually moving around and engaging the enemy while the bomber player just sits up there, invulnerable, dropping bombs until something happens.

As you might imagine, this is where the "bomber players are brain-dead morons being carried by their planes" meme comes from. The truth is that there is a fair bit of skill involved in actually making that playstyle work on anything other than the most favorable conditions, but nothing is more frustrating than going up against a space bomber who wins because of the map (and there are several maps where being a space bomber basically guarantees a win unless your team is utter garbage). Also because it takes a fair amount of planning and game knowledge to make this sort of thing work, it is also incredibly frustrating to have one of these guys on YOUR team because all he'll do is park himself over a cap and expect you to carry. And if he's an idiot, he'll park himself over an airfield and accomplish absolutely nothing.

(Also note that the "space bomber" isn't limited to tier 10 - they're just most obnoxious at tier 9 and 10, arguably the worst "space bomber" to deal with sits at tier 3 because there is literally only a single plane that can deal with him and if you don't have a competent human in one of those, he'll just lazily win without any serious effort)

Is there a faster way to obtain it than grinding or getting 300,000 free xp? What's the most affordable and fastest way to get there? at the pace I'm going it will be several months.

You don't want to step straight into a T9 as a newbie.

You should work your way up to it & the Corsair line which leads to it is a good experience that shouldn't be missed.
