Was just turning and shooting and trying not to die to avoid kids and work.  So when I someone who seems to have been clubbing a little, I always check their stats out of curiosity.  Saw someone with 46 hours in a P-26, a full 20% of their playing time, and yet it wasn't specialized according to the icon next to it.  Is that even possible?  Why would you not specialize a plane?

So that people don't notice your wings and ID you as a threat.  At low tiers you get very little out of specializing, so they are choosing to pick stealth instead.

I don't specialize my planes.
They appear to fly without specialization.

I really can't speak to anything but the bombers but I can say that if you are flying an unspec bomber, you only have 1/2 of a bomber.  And let's face it, a bomber is a target regardless.  I usually get more problems from the dang bot heavies than the actual people, though.  The red heavy bots have this cute (irritating) habit of streaking in at the last second just as the squall hits and suddenly they got Anney Oakley guns and BLOWIE.  My last 3 battles ended this way.

The little wings give the enemy an awareness advantage.

Specialization costs credits you could put towards something else.  (more of an issue at higher Tiers)

Yes, for really good reasons.

P-38F and P-38J.  WG has decreed that you WILL run the 37mm gun if you're a specialist in these aircraft.  Never mind that you would prefer to run the 20mm gun.

Bf-109Z.  WG has decreed the 4x30mm gun loadout for you, even though you find the 4x20mm group better.

XF5U.  So you like bombs, huh?  Well TOO BAD.  You get Tiny Tims, or nothing.

B&V P.212.  Sure, you'd love to run those four air-to-ground rockets, but NO!  NO SOUP FOR YOU!  R4Ms, peasant.

All good points.  The lightbulb went off in my head about the same time Captain_Rownd made his point about credits.  I had already forgotten that you have to actively purchase the specialist configuration.

The only reason you'd ever want to not run specialist is because you'd rather use a different loadout. However, that comes at the cost of most of your potential being thrown out the window, which is almost never a good trade, especially on ground pounders. Sadly, considering the current state of WoWP's development, that's unlikely to change anytime soon, so you're stuck with this wonky system :bajan:

This is my IL-2 (t). There are many like it, but this one is mine. :child:

Reason 1 :

People do not want to be accused of seal clubbing.

You know, like the guy who said " these aren't my pants ".

When the police searched him and found drugs in his pockets

I will have to remember this one.  Sounds believable to me.

At low tiers, you really don't get much out of specializing.  When I play low tiers, when I run into a specialist P-26, I hunt him as relentlessly as I can.  By not equipping his wings, he's got a much better chance to fly under the radar; unless I know the player, I try avoid contact with red players at those low tiers and try to just farm bots.

I have 90 specialized planes because Wargaming has programmed me to do it.

Even if you buy specialization, you don't have to use it exclusively. You can do different builds for the "elite" and "specialized" configs that are best for different tasks. E, G. heavies specced for bomber chasing vs. sector defense. It doesn't cost anything to switch back and forth.
