We fly an Axis vs Allies event most weekends in our Saturday Night Live training room, at 9:30 pm EST

Some weeks we let Euro planes fly as Allies, other weeks as Axis

What do you think, should they really be one side or the other?   or both?

Chinese are definitely Allies, right?

I say make them non-binary.  They can go either way depending on their mood and the circumstances.

Personally ... it would depend on many factors.  In theory an axis v allies is an attempt at historical "immersion". Breaking the spirit of that may not be wrong "technically" but it still hurts.

A formation of 3 Sakeen's with american rondels  and 3 Aircobra's on the same team makes about as much sense as having 3 zeros escorting 3 Fw 190 F's .
sure its technically possible... but that never happened.

In the same way that  IJN vs USN on the albion or cold peak map is ... possible in an alternate history maybe.

If you want to go crazy like that then imagine some sort of Harry Turtledove Alt history where the concept of a "Confederate Air Force" is a very real thing.
Which american lines go to which side?
and then ask which side imports foreign export designs from the euro tree or otherwise?  boomerangs beaufighters both of the french designs  the whole euro tree heck you can even take bf 109 b's with condor legion paint jobs with post 1941 stukas (because obsolete now that goering is using Fw 190's, 109 F/G 's and is about to roll out Me262's)

Fair warning. My success rate at speculative guesswork is on par with my WinRate. Hit or Miss.
I start on the right track and then sometimes make a weird left turn and get lost in the weeds ...

If you look at it, the Euro planes are all Allied with the exception of Sweden - Poland was part of the Western Allies when the war started (and WW2 in Europe basically began with the Invasion of Poland in 1939). Czechoslovakia was also one of the first victims of Nazi expansionism although you could make an argument for the succeeding Slovak Republic being a pro-German puppet state. Israel was... well, look at it. France as well until the fall of France and the creation of the Vichy regime.

If you wanted to get REALLY messy, you could rule that all Euro planes under tier 5 should be considered Allied and then from tiers 5 - 7 they'd be available for both sides seeing as the only European planes above tier 3 are mostly French and could arguably be said to reflect the split between the Vichy and Free French forces in WW2. The only really odd duck would be Sweden so I guess you could just ban the J21RB.

On a side note though I'm not sure about Axis vs Allies games since, while they can be fun, they can get pretty lopsided pretty quickly depending on tier. Anyone remember the 30 second slaughter that was mnbv_fockewulf's attempt at an Allies v. Axis game at tier 6? Soooooo MANY German cannons. The Allied team evaporated in the first merge and it was all cleanup after that. The balance tends to see-saw back and forth but I'm fairly sure I can tell which tiers will result in wins for which side all things being equal.  Also you have the issue of certain players only have certain planes related to certain countries so adding a nation restriction just increases the difficulty in proper matchmaking on top of the inherent imbalances between sides at each tier.

Overall, its fun for one or two games I guess but I'd be rather careful about it and keep an eye on who is available on which airplanes.

But a truce to this mournful story

For death is a distant friend

So here's to a life of glory

And a laurel to crown each end

trikke, this is why I suggested flying a particular nationality in a particular tier.  So, everyone flies a T5 Brit, or a T6 German, etc.

Or, everyone flies a P-12, non specialized, 50% pilot.

On Cold Peak.
