So, in this big crate extravaganza, I just got the Yak-3RD which means I am pretty close to approaching max premium at T7 and below, with a few stragglers, of course.

I searched the forums, but the discussions I found on this plane date back to 2015 or earlier.  I know I have seen stuff about it in other threads, but it seems buried.

Heck, if you want to post a link to a particular thread where I can learn more please do so.  In specs, it seems like a good turn plane at mid altitude, but the one-gun-Sue configuration with a piddly little 23mm in a land of 2 or more 20mm with .50 calibers seems quite weak.  Not sure I want to spend a whole battle plonking away at one plane.

What say you all?  Play it or hangar it?

Thanks for any feedback.

Love,

Bobby

Its 23mm is a tier 8 weapon though. More powerful than the 23mms found in other planes of its tier. Still a weak armament but not quite as terrible as you might think. Performance is hilariously good and that little rocket booster provides a lot of kick that helps the plane overcome its otherwise mediocre altitude.

On the whole not a hard carry but a fun little dogfighter. I would argue that it's firepower is deceptive - the gun is accurate, reliable, with good range and a nice long burst length and excellent dps for a single weapon all of which make it competitive with if not outright superior to planes like the Gustav which theoretically have better firepower but its all locked up in short ranged and unreliable weapons

So here's to a life of glory

Cool, thanks for the feedback SFMy, I am now inclined to give it a go.

I liked it for the dog fighting, but it will not do well against high alt fighters/HF that know how to use boom and zoom.  But for the most part, people at that tier wont know what they are doing so most battles will be a turkey shoot.

It's a tier 9 (10 even; the NR-23 is used by tier 10 USSR LFs) level 23mm that combines decent per-shot power with great accuracy, don't let the number one deceive you, it's actually equivalent to like 2 to 2.5 barrels of the plane's contemporaries. The rocket motor gives it excellent acceleration and can even chase dedicated zoomers or higher tier props for a short burst when combined with the gun's excellent range and accuracy for the tier, all while retaining the characteristic light Yak maneuverability...and flimsiness. The latter and the fact that it has only one gun means it fares poorly against GAA and even worse against bombers, but in a pinch the single gun still dish out rather decent damage to dent and down them if you can avoid defensive fire for long enough.

It has been my go-to mid-tier fighter for some time now (have it on both NA and Asia - on NA very first batch via marathon and from red box on Asia). It's good if dogfighting is your kind of game because you'll take some time to zoom someone to death with that lone gun not doing so much in one pass.

WoWP makes a great jousting game...especially with the 262 and people busy in furballs...
I am deaf, silent, and fly with unrealistic controls. Do not count on me to carry - my back's already broken from overweight.

It's fun.  The gun is a bit anemic, but the boost of that rocket is all the giggles.

If I had to compare it to one other plane in the WoWP universe, it most closely resembles the Me-209V4. All the quirks, just DIFFERENT quirks.  The ones that are the same - fast, with weak guns.  I have played successfully with P-51s of the D and H flavors...

If you have some gold ammo for autocannons lying around, try that !! The gun is pretty effective to start with, but with that ammo ... wow !

(not sure if I'm willing to pay gold for it, but as long as I have it, I'll use it)

I think it is a blast to fly, but I never score high in it and always dread when I see one on my team because it seems that nobody else does either.  It is very agile and the rocket booster always brings a big grin.  The problem is it takes too long to take anything down.  More than once I arrive first at a cap thanks to the rocket boost, get lined up behind the first ADA heavy I come across and start plinking away only to have the rest of my team flip the cap before I can even finish off that one plane. (Yes, I know I should revise my tactics...)  I'm hoping I'll eventually get enough pilot points to get Marksman II and see if that improves things.

I doubt if MM will add much to the damage you inflict ... not a lot of dispersion (weapon spread) with a hub-mounted gun, I guess.
