Not many still do this but I'm curious.

I salute every one pre-battle. Most don't anymore.

I don't wish them "gl (good luck)" or to "hf (have fun)" Because I don't want my opponents to have good luck and I don't particularly care if they have fun.

I use "<o". Some people seem to think that it is a left-handed salute but I look at it as a salute to everyone, not me standing behind a saluting guy. Some use i> or <i.

To me "07" is also me standing behind some saluting guy. Zorro uses <Z which is cool.

So is it only old faarts that do this, and is it a relic from the past?   :B

I'm "new" and generally 07 any time I see a Clan brother, someone that I know/recognize, or just a bunch of humans in the mix.  (had multiple games with 5 or 6 humans on a side this weekend, was rather nice to see.)

Out of respect to the ones who served our country.

And gave us the freedom to play this game.   :honoring:

I do sometimes salute, I agree with saluting all the time. The o7 is a left handed salute and I refuse to use that, what I consider an incorrect, one being former military.

A lot of the time I'll salute if I see someone at game start that I know, but not always.  Depends on how much time I have left after checking the player roster for bots and humans flying stuff that can kill my ***.

I didn't see much saluting in my early time playing the game so never got in the habit but it doesn't hurt to show respect or friendship to players that you know.

The salute itself appears to originate from civvies who while offering respect were unaware they were offering a salute with the saluter's back to you O7 or were saluting left-handed, which is just not on.  I prefer <0 which is both polite and pro forma.  So you have to use a Shift key, big deal.  It's an easy habit to develop.

Then, of course, one always has to come up with a Cunning Plan....

I always say "good hunting". Sometimes I get a salute or an "affirmative".

It has jack all to do with your brothers, mothers, fathers, and sisters fighting and dying in wars. It's a sign of respect to other pilots. In WWII there was a measure of respect between pilots.  :)

I served for 20 years and I don't consider 07 to be anything other than a sign or respect.

Really doesn't matter what you use, hell you can even flip me the bird & as long as it's not a Heil Hitler I don't care.

If you want to acknowledge other players with any variation of a salute then go for it.

For the people that get all puffed up & tell you that you're doing it wrong then I guess the one finger salute is also warranted.

Mostly I just say, "Bam a LAM boys!"  Some get it, some don't, but it can break the ice.

I like this one myself.   <.0.

This one \.0. ; however,  ticks me off to no end.

I am a wehr-a-boo.
But not THAT kind of wehr-a-boo

It is a good way to catch a few team kills, though.

Fair warning. My success rate at speculative guesswork is very hit or miss. Usually I start on the right track and then a make a weird left turn and get lost in the weeds ...
And yet it doesn't stop me from speculation.

Specialist Planes I have from : USA, UK, Germany, USSR, Europe
Light Fighters:  XP-31, Model 81A-1, P-40, P-51A, P-39N-1, XF15C, DH.100 F1, Bf 109 B / E / E-3, Me209v4, Me209 A
Multi-Roles: F11C-2, F4F, P-47B, Fw 56, He 112, Fw 190 A-1 / A-5 / D

Heavy Fighters: P-38 F/J,  XP-58, Tu-1, Bf 110 C-6, SE 100, Me 410, Do 335 A-1, Me 262

Attack Aircraft: Hs 123, Ha 137, Hs 129 A, Ju 87 G, Me 265, Me 1099 B-2
Bombers: Do 17 Z, He 111 H2, Do 217 M
 Japan: not even once.

Usually I don't have time for chit chat before the action starts, but I will occasionally give a "tally ho" to team mates or people I know. I kinda think it's in the spirit of the game.
