I really am only playing 4,5,6 right now, im noticing that planes that were awesome when I last played are no longer dominant and planes that I never used much before are very solid. what level 6 planes are worth flying? and im starting to get close to level 7, which level 7s are worth the effort? my 109f is great, my Sakeen is great, My spitfire is great and my me410 is great, all different but fun the russian planes at level 5 not so much which is weird because my level 3 and 4 russians were dominant.

Like you, I am a returning player. Last week, I did exactly what you did, and most people would, they went on a massive info hunt for what are the decent planes at tier 4-7. I am still on this information gathering while I continue to grind, learn the game, etc. Here is what I have found so far. Warning, some of this information may still be incorect as the source may not have been an experienced or truly knowledgeable player. But I gathered what I could and now I am vetting or discovering what is wrong or right about it.

Tiers 2-3 are dominated by whatever planes can out turn the other planes. Having canons on your plane instead of machine guns is not that important. Instead, being able to out turn the other guy or bot is all that is generally needed to do well. B-534, I-16(e.), Di-6i, F3F and other good turn and burn planes do well here. Heavy fighter can still do ok here, but a good turn and burn plane will usually do better.

Tiers 4-5 are still dominated by turn and burn planes. The defensive bot planes will generally not leave the cap circle. This means that they are rather forced to fight a turn and burn style of play, even the bot heavy fighters. This means that turn and burn planes with the smallest turning circle dominate these tiers. i-17, i-16(i.), A6M1, Ki-43-i, Spitfire 1, AD10C2. However certain heavy fighters can also do well here. SE 100, Ki-45, Bf 110 B, Bf 110 C, P-38F. But in my opinion the turn and burn planes still do better than the heavy fighters for most players. However the expert heavy fighter can do well here also. The novice heavy fighter player will not.

Tier 6-7 are half and half. The great turn and burn planes will do well here but tier 5 is where you begin to notice that heavy canons are beginning to do better than machine gunned planes. By tier 6 this is abundantly clear, As well, the vertical boom and zoom tactics are beginning to work again at tier 6. It used to be that a Bf 109 could go vertical against you i any tier and dominate the match. But that doesn't seem to be the case anymore and I'm not sure why. Going vertical now will often just get you killed. I have yet to investigate why this is the case now as opposed to pre-2.0. However, speed begins to give a strong advantage starting at tier 6. But for me, turn and burn planes that also have canons on them as opposed to only machine guns seem to do better here. Spitfire 5, Spit. V DB605, Yak-1M. As well, some of the boom and zoom planes start to do well here, but very selectively. An expert pilot can make some of them work. This is the same for heavy fighters as well. But for most players turn and burn planes seem to do best.

I believe this has something to do with changes made to the way going vertical now works in this game. Vertical boom and zoom used to be great. Now, everything just chases you down and can kill you when you try to go vertical. I believe someone tried to inform me that the mechanics of going vertical are different now, but it seems to not even be worth it for the mid to lower tiers. Heavy fighters can still do this but even then they have to be at practically max speed and only going at an 20-40 degree angle away instead of 70-80. It used to be that if  you went vertical all the turn and burn planes who tried to follow just fell out of the sky. Now they just follow you and kill you. At least that is my newb experience of it.

As for ground attack planes and bombers they don't seem to work for me at all. The situation is this, every base is now defended by at least 5 bot planes, not counting any actual members of the enemy team. So going to attack an enemy base where no one is doesn't work, because the bot planes will just gun you down. Going to attack a place where your people are seems to work best, but you don't get much out of it because you only kill 2 ground targets before the base switches. So you generally live, but get nothing done. So i haven't quite found a place for ground attack planes.

As for bomber planes at tier 4-6 I seem to just always get shot out of the sky by AA or other enemy planes no matter what I do. Sometimes I can get 30K bombing damage and still lose. Other times I do nothing but get shot down and win. Nothing seems to be consistent or work consistently and bombing seems to be a fail move in mid tiers. They claim that bombing is best at the higher tiers. but I have yet to see it.

It would be very hard to answer that since everyone has very different preferences.

Are you not flying the MiG-3?  The I-210 which comes after it doesn't seem to please many people, but the I-220 and I-250 are godly.

Yes, it's haughty and its arrogant but you're a battleship with 16 inch guns and Britannia Rules the Waves.  Maybe a bit of arrogance in this case is appropriate.

Well-liked: A6M5, Spitfire V, Ki-61, La-5, Me410, Ki-102, Tornado, IL-2(t)

  • A6M5 is very strong but very slow. Great for holding one center cap, bad for traveling the map.
  • Spitfire 5 and Ki-61 have enough speed and alitude performance to do a little bit of everything.
  • La-5 sacrifices some turning and altitude for really nice guns (if you're careful to not overheat them). Also has great roll rate.
  • Me410 deals a ton of damage and has enough speed to get away.
  • Ki-102 out turns all the other heavies and some multiroles, plus gets some of the speed the Ki-45 lacked.
  • Tornado is a Hurricane II but with a lot more speed.
  • IL-2(t) has a lot of ordinance plus relevant guns and an okay tailgun.

Matter of taste: Bf109F, P-51A, Yak-1M, F4U-1, Mosquito, P-38J, Ju88P, Yak-9

  • Bf109F loses guns of Bf109E, gains altitude performance. Some love it, some hate it. Wait til in machine gun range to open fire.
  • P-51A is like Bf109F but trades some turning for more speed. Makes it a bit better at chasing down heavies and bombers.
  • Yak-1M is a bit faster than A6M5, but much weaker guns. Not as bad as the tier 5 Yak-1, but still disappointing.
  • F4U-1 should be a Tornado but isn't quite. Everything's just slightly worse except gets better dive speed. Also, rockets take twice as long to reload.
  • Mosquito for if you like using bombs and rockets on a heavy. Worse altitude performance and terrible dive speed though.
  • P-38J is worse than the tier 5 P-38F. Still a solid heavy.
  • Ju88P just gets one huge gun. Takes awhile to capture a base and is hard (but fun) to hit planes with.
  • Yak-9 also gets a huge gun. Not as hard to hit with but missing a shot and then getting circled is disappointing.

Hard to figure out: Fw190A-5, P-47B

  • Fw190A-5 takes a lot of discipline.
  • P-47B can be played like a bad Mosquito or a bad Fw190... or is it just bad?

Just bad: I-210

  • Gotta really love altitude fighters to even like this one. It's too undergunned.

Good post, Sink.  Much appreciate that you post the fruits of your labours for the rest of us.  I, for one, am thoroughly entangled in these tiers and the info is really valuable.

I would like to point out that the German bombers at Tier III, IV, V are quite good.  The P-38 at Tier V is dominant if you know what you are doing.  Same with the Me-109B and Me-109E at their tier.

American bombers at VI and VII are VERY good at Spec.

so my own views on some of these planes.

I enjoyed the BF109 at every level right up until f which is undergunned but solid still

The hurricane is solid all around but not great at anything, im on the hurricane 2 which is great at bomber and groundpounder killing. solid all around planes though.

The p51 is solid if flown carefully but really is an altitude plane. I tend to do better with it as an interceptor. not a dogfighter but its guns really melt when used right.

The german heavies are beasts when you zoom and boom and look for injured prey. the me 410 might be my favourite plane and normally I am a turn and burn guy. its like flying a phone booth with a really big gun lol

the russian attack planes are good until level 4 , its hard to get air to air kills after that, which is strange because i averaged 3 a game until level 5.

best russians are the level 3 I15 I think, its just a beast, slow and not the best turner but guns are amazing  the level 4 is a beast as well, after level 5 they start to struggle. I have the level 7 prem and its got a good gun but isnt great at anything else lol the yaks are solid, working on getting the migs now. one line of yaks is good and has the turn ability the other is ok with firepower but no turn ability.

The american planes are mostly garbage to be honest, decent until level 4 but then just so outmoded its not funny. the p51 is good, and the first p38 is good.

I am hopeful they make a europe and include the italian and french planes in it not just as prems,

I also wish they had the ww1 biplanes as the level ones how much fun would it be to fly sopwith camels and spads against fokker dr1 triplanes and albatrosses?

one other thing, I see guys talk about balance all the time, I would prefer to see certain planes actually be unbalanced at certain levels, for instance the first bf109 should dominate the first fw190 should dominate, the spitfire should dominate, the p51 should dominate, (I dont really know enough about russian planes to say they should dominate or where) but the fact is that it was not a straight line, at different times different countries had an advantage
