Short form: OK, I admit I like the game and find it fun and entertaining.
Long form:
About 2 years ago I decided to take a break from WOWP and it's original iteration.
I began playing during the Closed Beta phase of production, about 1000 battles, then continued on past the debacle of 1.5 through to just before the release of 2.0+.
Total battle count ended at 29,924 with a 62% win rate.
With the threat of adding respawn and other, what I thought at the time was mumbo jumbo,
my prejudice led me to believe the game would be utter trash and no longer fun.
Eventually I decided to set aside my prejudice, download the NEW WOWP with a new perspective, give it a try.
My rule was to give the new game at least 1000 battles and then delete all remnants.
To my surprise I am sitting here typing a review and opinion at 994 battles and a 48% win rate.
Looking forward to the next chance I can log in and play.
The new hangar designs are more animated and impressive than the old static displays.
With a few clicks you can easily learn how to visit the different areas of purpose.
The second stop was of course the training room. With it's familiar set up I was quickly welcomed in to a completely new battle design and map lay out.
There were new bots, that were not selected, flying around protecting objectives and areas
of the map. These Air Defense Aircraft ( ADA ) took some time to get use too.
The ADA quickly began assaulting my plane. While in the middle of combat ( winning of course)
The opposing bot I chose as an enemy decided to show up and engage the ADA aircraft and ignore me. After getting destroyed by AA and being introduced to respawning in the middle of a match I did eventually win the training room award of " great job ". Several training room sessions later I opted out and into the real world of looking for humans.
Entering the real world of WOWP combat was a fast lesson in THIS GAME IS MORE THAN
FLYING AROUND SHOOTING PLANES. Being introduced to a new learning curve from loss
after loss created by the misconception of " shoot the red planes " I then began doing some
Forum and Blog research.
I have to admit that my prejudices were completely wrong about the new WOWP 2.0++.
This game has a more integrated tactical purpose than previous iterations making it more competitive within todays gaming market.
The command and control ( C&C )concept of superiority has been greatly improved with priority capture targets of Military Base, Command Center, Airstrip, Mining Plant, and Garrison.
Each C&C area has it's unique reward and protection.
Superiority is still basically the same as well as the total domination of last man standing win.
While the last man standing win is the hardest to achieve it has its own personal award.
While superiority wins are the dominate flavor for wins about 10% of matches can be determined by total annihilation of the enemy force.
The various planes have been given more stringent role versus reward and I suspect playing the particular roles determine more of a winning strategy than a loss. My experience from playing planes within their designed parameters has led me to more wins than losses. It is when I revert to my old unorthodox flying methods that the loss's cascade one after the other.
The game economy is also greatly improved and more rewarding than previous iterations.
Wargaming has also implemented various themes or goals to make the game more goal oriented and interesting. I reactivated my account at the tail end of Blade of Vengeance and was able to accomplish some of the goals and gain the rewards. For further info on the WG specials you will just have to jump in the game and give it a try.
The bar for goal achievement is not set as high as to not succeed, even for the worst pilots. There are also other means to achieve the desired gift, although costly and fairly overpriced.
Some of the pleasurable aspects of the game play is the minimized HUD system ( customizable in game settings ).
The hidden team tabs that use to detract from the background. Simply by pressing the TAB key one can quickly see
All the team members or bots. I prefer never seeing the other players so I do not bother with the TAB or team panel.
Included in the team panel is the particular plane mission goals for highest scoring.
There is still much to learn about the new game system. The highest learning curve is the equipment and specialization of each particular plane. How the new equipment impacts plane performance with the pilot enhancements and such.
I think Wargaming has created a viable marketable game that can keep pace with other modern games.
As a side note. The previous World of Wargames prior to 1.4 had its own niche market and would not be capable of competing in todays gaming market.
Here is a video of the tier 4 Blenny-F that I made trying to use the various new video replay camera angles.
I am not to happy with the removal of the free camera option, However I will continue to experiment with the video options.
