I have been picking up cheap low to mid tier ones that struck my fancy over the course of a year. They cost about as much as value meal at Wendy's.
So of course half of my 60 odd planes are premiums.

T3 Blenheim to learn to play precision bombers.
He-111 H2 to learn to play stick bombers.
IL-2 (mod) to learn ground attack.
XP-31 to learn Turn and burn fights tactics.
>>> careful how you use this plane./ it is the definition of a Seal Clubber<<<
Me109-E3 and Spitfire set (when available) as intros to more advanced Turn and burn tactics, especially if they sell the pilot too.
>>>Ummm, actually; The Bf 109-E3 is a intro into Boom & Zoom tactics.
Most of its "turning and burning" are of the vertical variety.
This Energy fighting is still an important thing to learn if you ever want to fly things that are fast at high altitudes
Get the LBsh Russian attack plane. It has 200mm cannons in the wings and nobody remembers that, it’s easy to surprise people with that.
Once you learn how to Turn and Burn well, the Spitfire DB605 doesn’t have a peer at its tear.
The P39-N-1 is almost, not quite but almost, as maneuverable as the spitfire and is a joy to fly.
That ought to to get you started.
RB-17 for
advanced [edited]kicking with a bomber.
Running a bomber will help you understand what kills them.
And help you out in eventually selecting a heavy fighter to switch off to when you get tired of bombing.
Will you want to get one? If you like bombers then yes.
Should you get one right away? No.
>>> its a bit pricey because its a tier 8 Premium.
Most tier 8 premiums are pricey. about the price of a triple A game on release day<<<
and do not always come with gentle learning curves.
Combined with WarGaming's policy on returns you should really take heed of the phrase "Buyer Beware"
But tier 8 premiums will make you the most in game moneys. By far.
Grinding daily missions to accumulate tokens having a tier 8 "anything" is required.
Finding one that you think you want to play a lot is really important.
So you can enjoy getting your money's worth.
Speaking of getting your money's worth ... pay attention to special bonus stuff that comes with certain offers.
For example the wings of liberty bundle gives you not just a plane and a hanger slot but a fat pile of gold (you could get some other cheap premiums with it) a fair amount of credits to get you started, a full suit of ultimate level equipment. and even some lootboxes
and a ten skill crew.
you could grind hard for 6 months and not have that last part.
All for 72 dollars american. That is not chump change.
But it DOES allow you to gain the benefits of a hard no life 6 month grind fest In the time it takes to pull out your credit card.

Fair warning. My success rate at speculative guesswork is much like my WinRate. Hit or Miss.
Usually I start on the right track and then a make a weird left turn and get lost in the weeds ...
And yet it doesn't stop me from speculation.
