Greetings

I have been trying to learn more about the game and got to the I-17.   I feel rather inadequate in matches, not doing much at all.

I have decided to go after airfield at the start of the match, because supporting the capture of any other objective leaves me not being able to do much.  Everything usually happens at a higher altitude than I can reach or at a higher speed, eventually having someone drop down and just shoot me down in a few seconds.  Trying to move to defend a different captured zone, takes too long and often times the story repeats, a lot happens above and not enough below for me to contribute.

Any strategy suggestions would be appreciated.

Cheers

I-17 has a -very- limited altitude, and going above it leaves you a sitting duck...

Try to stay low, and don't get baited up to their turf, where you lose your turning advantage.

I-17 is also kinda slow, making affecting the map difficult... possibly look into a different line of planes, with more mid-road stats... instead of one designed for very low alt, and very high agility.

I don't want to hurt you... I just want to kill you!

Use skills consumables and equipment that increase your cruise speed.

Skill-wise, Cruise Flight is ideal for this.
Engine Guru 1+2 also help out with this. It gives about half of the overall top speed that Cruise flight gives.
But it does grant a big pile of acceleration.to get you to that top speed faster. And unlike Cruise flight it is Always on.
it also costs a lot of skill points. but everything in the game is a trade off so get used to it.

There is the credit consumable that gives you a bit more cruise speed and some more acceleration to get to that new cruise speed faster.
Or you get the version that grants 2x the bonus. However it costs Gold. (#Pay2Win, boo hiss)

As for equipment, Polished skin is the way to go to get there faster.
The down side is that when you get there you wont be able to turn as well as you used to.
Again; everything is a trade off. Get used to it.

You still should not fly very high. There is nothing you can really do about adjusting your altitude band up or down.
But at least the fight wont be over when you get wherever you are going.

Thus s/he that gets there fast-est with the most-est wins.

As for tactics ... these are pretty straightforward.
To get the most out of your plane you should be doing as much shooting down of aircraft as you can. And doing it inside a capture zone will grant massive bonuses to your experience gain (for unlocking airplanes and pilot skills).
So your strategy is pretty straight forward. Go to the closest cap zone and kill everything red or white. (but not the blues)
Wash rinse and repeat.
Usually the first zone planes like yours prefer to go to is the middle of the map.
once that is dominated then it is an equal distance to any other zone that needs taking.
Of course the other side knows this too.
So you may spend the whole match fighting in the middle
(racking up a large personal score as well if there is a zone to control underneath you that also contains a repair/respawn spot)
and not being able to do much else.

while the rest of your team in Bombers, GAA and anything else that is fast will be going in a much larger circle around the map capping all the surrounding zones
and winning or losing the game for you as a result.

Fair warning. My success rate at speculative guesswork is much like my WinRate. Hit or Miss.
Usually I start on the right track and then a make a weird left turn and get lost in the weeds ...
And yet it doesn't stop me from speculation.

You are right saying that airfields are easier targets for the I-17 due to the higher number of air defense fighters. Garrisons would be your second choice, as you can often bag the two defense fighters and by that time the heavy defense fighters will have decided to dive down to your altitude. Having good awareness of your surroundings is key for fighting in a turn fighter. Use the map and the alt key to quickly identify what kind of planes are around you. If you see a heavy or even any other plane turning toward you, turn towards them. Don't take them head on, but instead fly a barrel roll or climb or dive so they miss you as they come towards you. Then, just before they start to pass you, turn as hard as possible. Start firing as soon as you get your guns on target. Remember that the center cannon is longer ranged than the machine guns, but if you fire all your guns right away, you won't be able to use the cannon later. Either fire all the guns in short bursts the whole time, or fire only the machine guns up close and save the cannon for when the enemy is flying farther away from you. The first time you hear/see someone shooting at you, immediately break off from your target and turn hard to get on the attacker's tail. The I-17's hit points are low enough that if you stay behind your target to finish them off, the enemy will quickly shoot you down. You must get clear as soon as you are attacked.

A word on speed. There is your actual speed and your altitude, which is like a bank of potential speed. Every time you've killed all the planes around you, use your boost to climb up to just below the yellow altitude band. Then, once your boost regens, use boost to bring your speed up to just below the yellow speed band. Then go hunting for targets. This will let you dive to attack or run away with faster speed if necessary.

If your cap is empty, go to the closest cap that has a medium amount of enemies attacking (2 to 4 enemies). Just 1 enemy and it will probably die before you get there. If a cap has more than 4 enemies in it and there aren't many friendlies there, stay out of it as they will quickly swarm you. If the enemy is focused on one cap, let them have it and instead focus on taking a cap that is weaker in defenses.

I-17 is one of the easiest planes to fly and battle in.  Keep turning, keep shooting.  Wreck everything, and in particular the ground attack planes.

if it's any consolation, i couldn't get any production from the i-17 either

i would def recommend trying the german 109b, and fly as high as you want!

it's fast, with a little bit of turny fighter fun mixed it

Me three.  The Yak-1 couldn't come soon enough.

Second the idea of the Bf-109B.  Learn to BnZ and that plane will rock your T4 world...

The I-17 will rip apart anything that makes the mistake of getting low around a good pilot in one.  If you have been up-tiered, then you are just about useless, except for GAAs, unless you can tease something down to you.  Flying this plane well means keeping it in its altitude, hitting planes that can out turn you first, hard, and fast, and always watching over your shoulder as the heavies and 109s try to dive on you.  I love it when  I have opportunity to have to defend a sector.  Planes in front of its guns vaporize.

And do not fire off bursts that are longer than 4 seconds to avoid overheating it's guns.

That.

Make it even more maneuverable with equipment and pilot skills and kill about everything that gets low enough. Including Zeros (sometimes) and Spits ...

turny planes are easier to learn in general, but boom and zoom sniper planes are more rewarding, for me anyway

but more frustrating, because you have to plan your entrance and exit in advance, and if you don't finish them on the first pass, you have to reset

bnz pilots generally need more in-game pilot skills... and more just plain human pilot skills

other folks do well in the i17, but i didn't enjoy it           i won't fly planes without manual flaps, because i lose a maneuvering tool used in 99% of the other planes

I loved the Bf-109B that I kept it.  I hated the I-17 so much that I rage-sold it as soon as I bought the Yak-1.
