Just curious, do bombs and rockets affect the plane's performance?

Generally, yes... they reduce your top speed.

 

Tho there are a few exceptions, like the Mosquito, which has an internal bomb bay.

Anything bombs or rockets that you can see placed outside of your plane will decrease it's top speed on a level flight and climb rate. However, some planes have internal bomb bays (aka, the bombs are inside the frame of the plane, not hanging under the wing or such), in which case the bombs only affect climb rate. There's a few exceptions, like the russian P-40 multirole, which carries rockets under its wings but suffers no penalties from equipping them aside of a tiny bit of climb rate :bajan:
