My flaps are set to F as I use the mouse wheel for zoom.

Air brakes and flaps together will help you turn inside just about anyone in a comparable plane.

so "air brakes" are different than "flaps"?  Sometimes or always?

As I understand it, flaps increase lift, but also slows the plane as more plane surface is available to the flow of air as you move forward. Brakes simply slow the plane down not affecting lift at all.

Given that, nose up (or down if you are flying upside down, or left if turning left, right if turning right) I have no idea how it is explained of what it does directly to speed.

The above speculation is that only, hopefully someone can correct me where I am incorrect.

Actually I have no idea what the difference in nose up and flaps could be, unless it has to do with one slowing the plane more than the other.

Flaps create lift and incidentally increase drag (giving a slowdown).

Air Brakes create drag without effecting lift.

Spoilers (which I don't think we have on any in game planes or at least no direction control of it) reduce lift without increasing speed.

That was beautifully put.

I was just wondering if on some planes they're combined, using the same keybinding, or if they're always distinct.  I haven't used either and don't even know which of my planes have one or the other.  (I am familiar with different types of flaps and air brakes on real airplanes)

I must learn about these "flaps" of which you speak...

I love dogfighting, one hand on the js for guns and throttle and keyboard for the rest. W for boost,E for flaps and in a dogfight those 2 keys are busy if your doing it right.

Got flaps and brakes under buttons on the stick and throttle for boost. So both hands on joystick ...

Btw ; get the impression that brakes do not work on all planes ...

well, not all planes had flaps or brakes, so that would make sense
