Anyone else think the typhoon is a little lackluster?  It’s too slow, the guns don’t kill really quickly, it doesn’t turn well, and the rockets, well, meh would be an improvement over what they are now.

I think it's great, as do some of my clannies...

Are you trying to compare it to heavies or something? (FYI: It has the same guns as the Hornet... they kill just fine)

Try comparing it to the F4U-4... which is also a tier 7 MR with quad 20mms.

I don't want to hurt you... I just want to kill you!

The base, stock Typhoon is a pain.  But with the 20mm guns and bombs (or rockets), this plane is pretty darn nice.  I like it a little better than the Dora, just because it turns better, even though it's a little slower.

In my experience, it turns too good ... I had a lot of trouble shaking some Typhoons and Tempests while flying Ki-94-II !!! And no, they didn't BnZ ; they turned ! That doesn't sound right ... even when they also know how to use flaps and speed.

Ok, so how are you guys setting up this plane?  What equipment / pilot skills are you using?

I set mine up to turn.  But my pilot skills are ADE, MMI and EGI.  The MMI has NOT helped with my rocket aiming.  I  need to practice more.

MMI wont help there, you need the Rocketeer Skill or appropriate hard point equipment

I get to about 2000 alt and horizontal everything that comes into range. If I get into the zone not much bothers me until I drop below 1000 alt. If I get too low it handles like poop.  The plane is nice right up to about 100-200 above the red line.

Meh, the typhoon is alright I guess... It's not horrible but it's not fantastic either... once it hits the tech tree it'll just be something you power through to get to the tempest and the hunter. That being said, I think I do actually like it better than the Sea Hawk... Outside of a good match up, that thing can just suck.

I haven't specialized mine so I just have a lightweight wing frame and gunsight on it.

I was planning on using it for ground attack, so sight + strengthened frame.

But it is a pretty decent fighter at the right alt ...

i never knew that flying too low affected maneuverability?!?!       maybe i'm reading this wrong?

It works for that, but not as a primary attacker.  As a clean up or assistant, it's great.  But 8 rockets are not enough to do anything except with a garrison.  Two Typhoons would kick butt.

Operating any plane outside its 'optimum altitude' affects its performance in my experience ...

but 'handling' is maneuverability, not speed, right?     how could flying low affect maneuverability?

i could easily see how flying too high affects everything, but the air is so much thicker at low altitudes

do we actually have in-game planes (besides maybe bombers) that are maneuverability-nerfed at low altitude?   can anyone think of any?

what could possibly be the rationale for that?

edit: again, i must have read this wrong

Like you said, bombers have performance issues at lower altitudes but in my experience they're the only class that does that. The Typhoon seems to work fine at low altitudes. I took it for a spin and it's a really good airplane.

So here's to a life of glory

whew... ty brother!

i don't notice much, but you would think that i might have noticed something as unusual as that

our 'compare planes' list an altitude that where the speed is optimal, but i would love to see turn times at maybe three different altitudes

WG has that info... i suppose that we could time 360s in every plane in a training room and share it, but i'm too lazy

It's not the plane, it's what it's shooting at that performs not as well.  So well is relative.

A Yak-1 can out turn anything in the white but take it into the yellow and it's a pinata. The Typhoon on the other hand is fine a few hundred meters in the red zone before it turns into a pinata.
