This might be the most difficult plane I have. It's slow for what it is, and doesn't climb very fast, and it has that difficult gun/cannon combo where both are firing with different muzzle velocity along different arcs.  Worst of all, they're japanese guns that can only be fired in short bursts.  But I'm both a masochist and not a quitter, so though I hate the experience I still fly it regularly.  I have trouble breaking about 3000 points in a battle with this plane, and only if there are some weaker bombers to attack.  The better bombers wreck the Ki-88 quickly without losing significant HP.

edit: interesting, I just watched somebody's youtube with it and they kept it generally below 500 dogfighting the bot boomerangs.  basically the opposite of what I was trying to do

Get into the furball and own the fighters - your performance in that situation is vastly superior to all but the most maneuverable of fighters and you'll cream things hard with 2cm/3cm combo.

The next tier is more of the same thing...

WoWP makes a great jousting game...especially with the 262 and people busy in furballs...
I am deaf, silent, and fly with unrealistic controls. Do not count on me to carry - my back's already broken from overweight.

Ki-88 is the premium large fighter.  Are you saying that it's like the Ki-84?  The tech tree Ki-43-II is certainly a very different (and also quite difficult for me) kind of plane.

I was thinking that being large and (supposedly) high speed with a 37mm cannon it would be good for going after GAA, heavies and bombers and swooping on wounded fighters, but the guns can't sustain DPM and tailgunners and turrets rip it up fast in return.  Aren't all the popular manouverable fighters going to own it in the caps?

Ki-88 is a mediocre premium in my opinion. Take A6M3 experimental as a comparison, Ki-88 has worse firepower and worse maneuverability. Less to mention A6M3 exp. is a tier 5 and Ki-88 is a tier 6. But it is not that bad either, many other tier 6 planes struggle more.

My recommendation is to take both marksman skills to make it easier to land shots with guns of different calibers. The play style is different from a typical TnB fighter like zeros and spitfires. Ki-88 has better speed and better altitude performance at a cost of worse maneuverability. Though I don't think it is a BnZ fighter either. I used a hybrid playstyle, try to turn fight with BnZ fighters but avoid doing so with TnB fighters.

Once you manage the play style of this plane, it can perform well. But definitely not one of the best fighters in tier 6.

I have discovered that fighting with Japanese fighters, you have to use short bursts to prevent the guns from overheating. Try short bursts and make sure you adjust your lead to compensate (increase lead) for the higher caliber cannons. You should see better results using this method.

Is the tech tree Ki-61 more like the Ki-88 than the Ki-43-II?  I really don't like the Ki-43-II, but I'm working with the Ki-88.

OK, Ki-61 is nothing like either Ki-43-II (thankfully) or Ki-88
