You've probably seen this video:

 

 

I was surprised to find out that it has been restored and is close to me, at the Flying Heritage Museum less than an hour north of Seattle.  The late Paul Allen built this museum, and most of the vehicles are flyable/driveable.

The plane crash landed and was found with an oil rag stuffed in an oil line; either sabotage or incompetence.  The pilot was captured by the Russians.  He died in 1989, the same year this airplane was found.

this.  The Fw-190 is just a lovely plane, right up there with my Art Deco waifu P-38 for sheer beauty in the air.

probably incompetence, but fighter pilots can be real a**holes to crew chiefs, etc

 

it's probably happened at least once in every country

it's probably happened at least once in every country 

 

Our country is no exception, BTW.  I have seen everything from contaminated hydraulic fluid in a B-52D in SEA to a paper fire set under the [edited]end of an F-15 (where some fuel leaks).  I don't think the B-52 ever flew again but I don't think the F-15 was damaged.

Pilots can be hard on planes too. I saw an F4 in Alaska where the pilot got too low "strafing" moose. Nosecone was shattered, one of the engines went out, there was a hole in the wing I could put my arm through, canopy was shattered so the Gunner had to fly it back because the pilot had hypothermia. 

 

I saw the damage, but can't confirm the story!  I was a bartender at the NCO club at the time ...

 

Those F4s were built like a tank.

No gunner on an F-4.  You must mean the Weapons Officer.

In an AF Phantom, there was no flight controls for the Wizzo.

The GIB was along for the ride, full stop.

Any other reason an F4 could sustain such damage?  Trees are pretty scrawny in Alaska.

Speaking of abuse of military aircraft, you made me remember something from the early 2000s.  At that time, I was in the US Marines and my unit was an F/A-18 training squadron in MCAS Miramar, San Diego, CA.  I was on a training detachment on one of the Carriers.  We had student pilots who's time came to do their Carrier Qualifications.  I was merely one of the maintainers in Avionics.  During Night Page, I was doing Final Checker on the forward catapults.  While waiting for one of our birds to come up to the cats and do my final check, I typically look to the back of the ship to watch the flight operations, touch and go's, traps, etc.  It's really organized chaos, props to the guys that make sure all this madness goes smoothly.  Anyways, one of the Navy Hornets, a "C" model, was coming in for his landing.  Watching his lights, you immediately start thinking, "That doesn't look normal, that's going down fast..."

 

This Hornet lands on the deck with a crazy, loud *CRUNCH* but did not stop.  It hit the deck so hard that the ship shook.  The insane thing was that I see this d*mn Hornet skidding along the angled flight deck, afterburners going, the main landing gear broken and hanging back like a dead bird as the jet skids forward.  Sparks were flying, you can see debris fly off, and this thing was skidding on its fuselage tank, AND TOOK OFF!  I couldn't believe what the f--k I just saw.  The Hornet took off somehow and supposedly it was directed to fly back to San Diego since we were only off the coast.  Air ops were suspended and everyone had to FOD Walk the flight deck several times and we were picking up pieces from the jet.  Once that was done, operations resumed.

 

Different story on another Carrier training det.  I was doing Final Checks again on the forward catapults.  This was still the early 2000s, the USN still had Tomcat squadrons but they were in the twilight of their service.  I was [edited]'ing with some Tomcat guys and saw one of their F-14's do a hard landing, making the ship shudder and everything. 

 

I laughed at the Tomcat guys I was with saying, "Looks like you guys got to do a bunch of overstress inspections." :D

The guy I was with said, "Nah man, she's good, she's tough she'll going to take off again."

Me: "No f--king way, that thing smashed the crapout of herself on the deck!"

Tomcat proceeds to go to the forward catapults for another launch.  The Sailor from the squadron she belonged to smiled, "Grumman Iron Works, baby."

 

Carrier aircraft have very sturdy landing gears for good reason.  Not to mention the airframes are heavy, tough because of this punishment.
