I have a Specialist rating in tier 1 to tier 4 USSR fighters. Was GREAT fun, battle after battle of pure murder. I am going to get into a Yak now, in tier 5, where things start to get serious and my win and kill rate will go straight down. I know this.

How are the Yaks best flown?  Are they also low alt murderers like their brothers in the lower tiers?  Are they slooooow like lower tiers? Do I fly them just like lower tiers, just a little higher alt? Do their guns overheat after 3 shots?  What will I be looking at with the tier 5 Yaks?

And which tier 5 Yak should I get first?

Well, to compare the tier 5 yaks, the Yak-1 is an incredible turner, but has wimpy firepower with it's little mgs and "tickle" cannon.

The Yak-7 is an ok turner but while it has the standard 2 wimpy machine guns, it can upgrade to the incredible 37mm derp cannon that rarely hits, but totally destroys enemies in a few hits when it does. Yeah, basically you're the low altitude garbage man... if it flies too low it dies.

The Yak-1 takes forever to get kills, but the only things that can turn with it are Zeros, Oscars, and fully equipped/specialized Spitfires. The Yak-7 is kind of like a flying shotgun, at range, it's pretty hit or miss, but up close, especially if the enemy is flying straight, they will die quickly in just a few hits. It does not turn anywhere near as fast as the Yak-1, so it's a lot harder to fight fast turners like the zero and Spitfire.

You do have to watch out for boom and zoom planes (bf-109,fw-190, migs, American fighters, heavies), because you will not be able to chase them. You have to turn before they pass you so you can turn fast enough to get your guns on target before they speed away again.

As to which to get first, the Yak-1 is probably easier to get used to because the 37 on the yak-7 is hard to aim. But, if you like crazy heavy cannons, go with the Yak-7, just realize that it'll be a bit before you have the xp to unlock the 37mm.

Thanks! That's what I needed to hear.  I am thinking the Yak 7 as I am used to not taking all day to kill a plane. The 7 may miss a lot, but if I have to turn off a plane when flying the 1 before I kill it because I am being shot at, what's the diff? I think I prefer to learn how to aim the 37 so far.

Tastes differ ... I took the branch from I-17 up, the Yak-1, Yak-3 and Yak-15, all great turners. Because of that you can easily stay on someone's tail and kill him with the mg's. And the Yak-1M and Yak-3 have 20mm's.

I also tried the other Yak branch, the Yak-7 and Yak-9 and still do not like them .. hard to land hits with the 37mm and maneuverability is not great. In head-ons they rock.

And don't forget the other 2 Soviet branches ; the LaGG and MiG, great fighter lines.

The Yak-1m was one of my favourites. Yak-15 also was quite fun.
Yak-3 was a bit of a disappointment for me (was so looking forward to this machine because i'm such a fan of it irl), but it didnt really feel like an upgrade coming from the 1M.

the altitude nerfing doesn't do any good to this line in the higher tiers

Pretty much covered: Yak-1 line are pure agility at the expense of firepower, speed & altitude.

Yak-7 line is all about the big cannon, still pretty poor altitude & speed but add mediocre agility.

La line has several of my favourites La-5, La-9, La-15. They kinda slot inbetween the two Yak lines, a happy medium.

I have very much enjoyed the Yak-3.  It turns so well, and hits pretty hard.  I am going to go to the Yak-15 and stop in that line.

I am going to go further in the Ki line - up to T9.  I will stop there.  The one where I am going to try and own the skies is in the Bf-109 line up to T10.  The suffering will be great, but the ultimate prize will be mine.

Or I will finally have enough XP with the Me-262 line to get the HGIII.

I am going to go to the Yak-15 and stop in that line.

I would suggest continuing, they ain't pretty planes but the triple 23mm on T9/10 is pretty awesome & speed is less of an issue than with Yak-15 which is pretty awfully underpowered.

Yak-7 is a keeper in my garage.  The derp is accurate and the velocity is low but tolerable.  Maneuverability is better than anything that's not a Zero or a Spitfire.

Yak-1 all day, Turn and burn down low and you'll have a hard time finding more maneuverable planes than you. Yak-1M is my new love and has sparked my interest in the line itself

They do. That's why they are so infuriating.

I love my Ta-152 so much that I might have to explore this part of the Yak line in order to get this magical sniping power.

I've flown the Yak-7 and it's not a bad plane but I don't really like its mixed firepower which is similar to the Bf110C-6
