Most of the Noob advice from World of Tanks applies here as well.
Step one:
Don't rush to tier ten.
There is plenty of fun to be had at low to mid tiers. And in this server, this is is also where you will find most of the humans.
Additionally:The bot skill is beginner until teir 4, then it becomes consistently better. And pretty brutal from tier 8 and up.
Step two
cut your teeth in tiers 1 2 and 3 with all the biplane Barn storming turn and burn action
The xp cost is so cheap that you can research out one nation to tier 4 in less than 3 hours a day.
Most of the planes are similar enough at that point that you can train up some pilots for a bit as you get used to the game. and determine what (if any) national tech tree you want to explore
At tier 4 is when the National flavors become distinctive.

Fair warning. My success rate at speculative guesswork is much like my WinRate. Hit or Miss.
Usually I start on the right track and then a make a weird left turn and get lost in the weeds ...
And yet it doesn't stop me from speculation.
