I wonder if you folks could give us new players pointers on how to locate specific players on the map or in the visual. I can see them as we start, but I lose track of them. In WoT, their names appear above their tank marker on the map. But, it seems that in WoWP, I have to have a visual, and it must be relatively close. I know the Alt key helps.

 

On a related note, I watched a YouTube video of a battle replay where the list of combatants included little check marks or diamonds for human players. Is this a mod?

There are indeed mods that add marks next to bot names so it's easier to distinguish them from regular players.

 

As far as identifying planes and players, it's a combination of a few things. First off, the minimap marks planes of different types with different symbols:

As a bit of a test, try to identify each plane type on this minimap (sorry if it's too small):

Each symbol will be visible on the minimap and the larger map you see when you press TAB. With this in mind, here's a way to keep track of players.

 

First and foremost try to check how many players are in a battle. Population tends to be low outside of Events, so at most you'd usually have to keep an eye out for 3-4 human players, maybe less. Check which planes they're flying. If they're on a specialist aircraft, you'll be able to identify them whenever you see the winged icon somewhere and it's not blue. If they're not flying specialist planes, look to see if there's any other plane of the same type, and whether or not it's a bot. If you're against two player Heavies, and there's only two Heavies on their team, you know whenever you see a Heavy icon on the map that's them. This is especially helpful at higher tiers, where population is so low it's rare to be in battles with more than 2-4 players.

 

If they're not the only plane of their type, then you can try to keep track of whichever planes are around you. Unless you're near a furball of fighters chasing each other's tails, it should be relatively easy. If, say, there's 3 GAAs (Attack Aircraft) on the enemy Team, one of them being a player, and you spot two bot GAAss lolling about on a nearby sector, should you stumble upon a third GAA or see them in the map then you'll know that's the player. In the case of light fighters, which are the more popular aircraft type and you'll often see several players flying them, alongside a few bots, it would be hard to keep track of every single one of them.

 

However, there's a work around, and that is doing the opposite logic of that last part I mentioned. If there's 6 light fighters on the enemy team, 4 of them being players, and you can spot the two bots, any other light fighter you see on the field or the map will be a player. It's not a perfect method, but it can still give you an idea of where each player is. As you can see, identifying where enemies are is a combination of logic and situational awareness. Check what you see, then check the map and the team roster to confirm the location of things you can identify, and from there see what else you can figure out through elimination (both metaphoric and literally :playing:)

 

I personally use this method all the time when I play, so here's a video where I show off a bit of sneaking around trying to avoid enemy players:

Yes, you can find this Bot mod here in the forum, it marks bots with an asterisk.

What is much worse in this game are the planes not presented in the Tree - they were given to players at various events probably, and when you meet one in the battle, you're screwed. No info about the firepower, speed, shooting range, nothing. Then you have to search for it at the website and still get no full info, which is carefully hidden under additional info link of every module mounted on that plane.

Edit: Oh, and I noticed right now that you can't get half info at all. No resists, no cruise speed, boost speed nor time...it sucks, to be short.

I commend you folks for being able to keep track. I am so busy figuring out where to go at the start that I normally lose track of where the humans have gone. It might be a good suggestion to WG to make it a little easier for us, much like WoT. In WoT, I'm always quite aware of where everyone is. Also, if we could more easily separate human-controlled planes from the bots, it would be nice. Often, I don't know until I see the names (or Specialist wings). But, I'll try the suggestions by LMG (thanks).

WG will never differentiate humans from bots, only a mod will help with that...  thank you KJ

 

i don't fly without his mod, but my flight partners don't need it...  they can tell a bot from a human because of a bot's programmed tendencies 

 

because they notice all kinds of things and i do not

Lock on (manually with mid mouse click) and use the alt key...

 

It's the best you can do in 2.0 because WG removed over target marker customization...

Bit difficult on tier VIII and higher where the assassin über-bots will shoot you in the back out of nowhere ... by then it's too late.

As noted in another thread, you can redefine your Alt key to become a toggle.

to toggle on the Alt interface, right click it and change it from 'momentary' to 'press on press off'  or whatever WG calls it

 

then choose (i think) advanced display setting?  toggle on 'altitude and speed when using alt int' using the check boxes

 

it may be more info than you need 100% of the time, but soooo helpful for making target decisions, especially when entering a cap
