I find myself do a lot of horizontal turn to catch up with enemy fighters.

What planes are good at horizontal fight?

Out of the top of my head Japanese light fighters, Spitfires, Lavochkins and the light Yakovlevs all do pretty well in a turnfight. Though they usually have a tradeoff for how well they turn, either in firepower, altitude performance, speed, healthpool or a combination of those.

This is my IL-2 (t). There are many like it, but this one is mine. :child:

Pretty much what LMG said. The Japanese Army and Yak fighters excel at all tiers while the Japanese Naval line excels at low to mid. All of them sacrifice durability though, and the Yaks and IJN are strictly low altitude.

Spitfires and Lavochkins are second tier but are also faster and much more heavily armed with the Spit generally considered the best all-around fighter in the game

Of those in my own hangar from the lower tiers (I''m in no rush), I've found these do well in turn fights:

Tier 1 -

  AR 65 Germany

  I-5  Russia

Tier 2 -

  I-15  Russia

  F2F  USA

  P-23  USA

  Bulldog  UK

Some pilot/equipment mods like Aerobatics (pilot) make a difference as well.  As far as aircraft parts for improvements go, use Enhance ONLY, Never use Calibrate because it's a rip off.   I understand from some other commenters that Calibrate can be used in the higher tiers under some circumstances but there are other posts on that subject.

Cheers,

You can study and compare planes that excel at turning, called maneuverability, in the tech tree.

Hover over a plane in tech tree and you'll see this window.

If you right click a plane, then click 'information' this window will stay open and you can open other planes info to compare.

Spitfire DB 605 is a good premium if you want to turn and burn.

Speaking of burn ...
Notice the trade off. all those planes pictured say "Often Catches Fire"

In these planes, players have managed to catch on fire 3 times in short order. if you wish to go this route take every fire prevention/stopping skill/item that you can

As has already been said, Japanese fighters, the soviet Yak line (also the I-17 at T4), and spitfires. At T4 the AR 197 german multirole can also hold its own against fighters.

Calibration is not useless, it's expensive, but it's not useless. It's of questionable value if you plan on continuing to enhance the equipment though.

Oh, and what was that about the Spitfires being "second tier"? Them's fightin' words... :P

They don't technically turn as fast as the Kis, Yaks and Mitsubishis'.

At that point it doesnt matter that much when such engagements can be decided by how much manuverability within turns you have squeezed out of your plane of choice with
aerobatic expert,
lightweight wings and engine,
aerodynamic expert (to jack up those equipment buffs)
and finally things like mindful use of
throttle control, flaps,
whether or not your plane is locked to camera view,
the overall in/accuracy of your guns and how large an auto hit window you get from Marksman 2 and certain random bonus from the gun sight.
