So, we can surmise that, trying to get the bonuses you want could skyrocket that cost... into the 8 digit range, or beyond (ok, that's exaggeration)... for a single piece of gear.

And an additional untold number of winning games for materials... for a single piece of gear "How you want it".

But don't worry.... after a few months of bleeding the players dry, they -might- release the rest of the system allowing rerolls on bonuses...

Till then, enjoy all the max'd out Spitfires and Pancakes that hardcore players, with 100's of millions of credits banked, are playing every day for farming purposes, everyone~

Yeah, the chance of getting a useless or very minimal utility bonus ability is quite good for the three attempts you get on it without having to deconstruct and start over.  I suppose to get a completely perfect set a player may have to deconstruct and re-attempt three or four times before getting a perfect and optimal result.  As shown here, I did not do that...because I was not aware at first that you could do that, and also I don't think I'd have had the stomach to go through with it if I had been aware of that.  The costs would be astounding.

I'll hold onto my sub-optimal ultimate equipment until tweaks to this system come along that allow for a less costly avenue for bonus ability retraining/rerolling.

As for the very strong at the moment Spitfires and such...I chose the 109B instead for a low to mid tier tricked out plane, and she performs very admirably now.  I dare say she is an even nastier plane when flying the razor's edge of equipment upgrades on specialist than she was before patch 2.0.5.   The cost of getting her to that level of performance, though, is not a small commitment of time and resources.
