With the new patch, aircraft that unlock their specialist configuration are stuck with what the game considers "top configuration". Here's the problem, not all aircraft benefit from only using the last researchable module available. For example, the IL-8 can deal more damage with the six FAB-100 bombs instead of the two FAB-250 bombs. Yet the Specialist IL-8 only has the FAB-250s available. The same happens with Multirole Fighters, like the F4U-1 Corsair and Tornado that cannot run their bombs over the rockets once they reach Specialist status. Also, on some planes people don't like running all of the "top" guns, which is a common case with German Heavy Fighters and even some GAAs.

Now, normally this wouldn't be an issue since WG stated that we can run the plane Elite instead. However, some of these planes have vital equipment and consumable slots locked behind the Specialist status. You want to run Universal ammo on your reargun? You need specialist. Engine equipment on your Fighter? Only with specialist. Improved gun accuracy to counteract gun upgrade negatives? Specialist or bust. It makes it a handicap to run the plane in any other way than what the game tells you to, as it prevents the players from getting the most out of their plane or even acquiring some critical stat boosts on aircraft that really need them.

So my suggestions to deal with this seemingly unfair system are:

  • Allow planes with multiple bombs and/or rockets available to switch freely between them when running as Specialist aircraft. Maybe even guns, but then that kinda removes the whole purpose of being able to switch from Specialist back to Elite, which I don't mind. In fact, if they want to give us more progression to works towards, how about...

  • Making Specialist work the same as Elite, remove the equipment restriction and make it just a straight upgrade. That way players have a reason to work towards it instead of just ignoring it when they can't run their plane like the game wants them to.

  • Allow us to choose which slots to use without the Specialist requirement. Since the whole point of this update seems to be choice, why not give the players the oportunity to properly decide how to run their aircraft? Especially considering some of the equipment available for certain Elite aircraft seems a bit doubtful. The Ju 88 P that can only use its gun to deal damage, so it relies on its pilot and being able to hit the target, has no way to innately improve its weapon accuracy. However, it can get engine consumables? Even though speed is not really its problem with 45 seconds of boost and two engines in case one gets shot?

What do you guys think? Make one of these changes, leave things as they are, or do you have any better ideas?

This is my IL-2 (t). There are many like it, but this one is mine. :child:

if the pilot's good, see, I mean, if he's really..sharp, he can barrel that baby in so low [he spreads his arms like wings and laughs],

you oughtta see it sometime, it's a sight. A big plane like a '52. VRROOM! There's jet exhaust, fryin' chickens in the barnyard.

Wait WHAT! you mean we cant select modules we like when specialist is unlocked?

I like running no ordinance build on most of my planes, so under this system I would have to either slow my plane down with bombs or sacrifice the specialist upgrade benefits??? that's some serious [edited].

one of the reasons I liked the game is because I can play it MY WAY, if I can't do that why even bother playing.

Again, please be aware that, at least for the Multiroles, you CAN choose to go without ordnance in Specialist. I've flown Freya as a pure fighter with no bombs or rockets for... oh, four to five games so far in her Specialist mode and she does not appear to suffer any negative effects.

Now, this comes with a bunch of caveats:

1. I do not know if I will be limited in future, i.e; this is currently a bug or a result of the Specialist Configurations not actually being in the game yet

2. I do not know if I am receiving the bonus XP for being a Specialist - too much crunching to figure out

3. I do know that all my equipment slots are still active as are all my consumable slots unlocked by the Specialist status.

4. I do not know if I will be limited only to Improved equipment or if I will still be able to retain them in Advanced and Ultimate forms. This will take a while to get to.

But a truce to this mournful story

For death is a distant friend

So here's to a life of glory

And a laurel to crown each end

With how specialist works, just to clear this up.

With specialist, you run "top end" payload, or none at all. You can run a Pancake with Tiny Tims, or nothing at all, a Mosquito with bombs and rockets, just bombs, just rockets, or nothing at all. It only locks that specific payload slot to all or nothing.

So, for example, the IL-8 as LMG brought up, you can either run it with 250kg bombs and ROFS-132 rockets, just bombs, just rockets, or nothing at all. The problem comes you cannot use 100kg bombs which are generally superior because it is the medium configuration of payload. Another example would be the F-84B/F, you can run it with Tiny Tims and HVAR's, just Tims, just HVAR's, or nothing at all; you cannot use bombs whatsoever, even though bombs are considered a solid alternative to the Tiny Tims. Basically any plane that has medium-configuration setups for guns/payload gets screwed with specialist config which is a massive problem since -as LMG brought up again- some of these planes have vital equipment locked behind specialist config, and being forced to play a specific way or in flatout inferior ways is not exactly the best idea for getting people excited for this new system.

I do fly Chinese aircraft a fair amount so... *ahem*

CHINA NUMBAH WAN

I even made a custom skin for my IL-10M!
