The German bomber line really caught my eye when they first came out.  At that point, the original trio of premium bombers had already been out for awhile and I had already discovered that I really appreciated the new aspect of play that bombers added to the game, and the two different means of accomplishing that goal.  Although I enjoy the high-risk adrenaline rush playstyle of barnstorming in my A-26, I really preferred the high alt chess-like play of the Blenheim.  Upon realizing the German bombers would play in the same high-alt playground with even better metrics immediately caught my interest.

None of the bombers in the line were a disappointment, though I have to say that the Do.217M is simply best at doing her job.  Unlike the 17 and 88 the big Dornier can conceivably be built for low alt raiding and with proper planning and experience can do well in the role.  Personally speaking, if I'm going to fly low...I'll take my A-26 for the Daka.  In the high-alt role the big Dornier is quite fast and decently defended when fully upgraded.  Particular tier VI and most tier VII heavies will stomp all over the Dornier 217, but that's their intended role.

Since she is not a premium, you'll want a dedicated crew for the Do.217.  In a high-alt setup pilot skills I suggest are Expert Bombardier and Engine Guru.  Follow up with Engine Guru II and then choose what you want.  For a high-alt Gunner I suggest Armorer and Ballistics Expert followed by Critical Hits and Defensive Fire.   For a low-alt raider config a Pilot should have Protection Expert, Firefighter and Both Engine Gurus.  His gunner should have Defensive Fire, Critical Hits, Quick Aim and Endurance.   Equipment loadouts are different for each role.  The high alt Dornier should take Engine Tuning, Bombsight and Gun Stabilizer.  The raider should equip Reinforced Covering, Reinforced Airframe, and then a choice between Armor Plates, Livery or Gun Stabilizer depending on personal taste.

The Do.217M works best in concert with a group of planes attacking a target, as her single load of bombs may not flip the cap depending on RNG accuracy of bomb drops.  If forced to go after a capture point alone, be sure to eliminate the high altitude AA guns at first opportunity and do not loiter in areas with active AA guns while reloading your bombs.  Keep an eye on the map radar to watch out for aircraft on an intercept course with you and don't forget to free-camera look around your bomber now and then to watch for approaching bandits.  If your defensive gun starts shooting at something and you weren't expecting it to, you have goofed up.

Overall, she's a fun bomber to play and I'm not getting rid of her.

Good hunting!  :honoring:

That 8 bomb payload holds a terrifying potential in low alt passes, just sayin'.

"demolition expert"  instead of "expert bombardier."

And "precision gunner" instead of "critical hits" but I'm sure everyone knows what I meant.  :P

It sure does.  Too bad the A-26 is superior to her in all other ways in that role.  Just sayin'.

No argument there... except perhaps to point out that the 217 has one advantage over the A-26... it doesn't tempt you into playing it as a HF.

It'd be nice to see that dive brake utilized in some fashion... mabey.

Yeah...that would be cool.   And something to tempt the high-fliers to take her out of her element.  BUT, if she could do high alt shallow dives that IMPROVED her accuracy?  That's an idea.

Edit:  Alternately, have them deploy when you hit the air-brake button.  Ahistoric use, of course, but using this thing as a dive-bomber without some significant incentive to do so means that role will never come up.
