Side point: Red Baron actually only used the DR1 triplane right at the end of his career, got the big majority of kills on earlier biplanes and most of them weren't painted red.

I was under the impression he flew in Red all the way back to his D.III days and the only non-Red plane he flew in was the Rumpler he flew in as an observer.

But a truce to this mournful story

For death is a distant friend

So here's to a life of glory

And a laurel to crown each end

Not all his planes were red, he painted the first one red when he became squadron leader of Jasta 11 which I think was an Albatross. Not all his planes were all red, I think even some of the Dr.1's he flew were only partially red. The Dr.1 wasn't really that great of a plane, it was highly maneuverable and had good climb but was slow, badly built, tricky to fly and suffered from wing failures.

Tier 0 would be cool for a "training" tier!

best idea that i've read today...  or so far this week, really

i still cannot believe that there's no protected tiers for low time pilots

It's an unfortunate consequence of the matchmaker. Part of my hope with the competitions and ladders coming up is that players will get a lot more chances to actually get into battles that are larger than 3v3 or 5v5. Obviously they won't be random battles, but I think it'll be a better outlet to try and actually recapture a bit of that feel.

Giving pilots names is one of those things that really helps people form an identity with their crew. I'd still eventually like to see us offer customization of names and portraits.

1943 was an awesome game, btw. :)

The change to the matchmaker that was implemented in 1.6 just didn't work for our region, mainly due to population, but it was also an attempt to create a better balance in the game. If players recall back to prior to 1.6, there were a lot of calls for a more balanced matchmaker: balance in tiers, balance in plane types, balance in number of flights per side, etc. And there were some safeguards put into the matchmaker as well that protected players below a certain battlecount (sandbox protection), we had the karma system that was implemented because players were getting placed against planes two tiers higher than them. In theory, the matchmaker changes were what players asked for, but in practice it didn't work out well for us--it just made it really difficult to create a match based on all these "perfect elements" and led to people waiting way too long to get into battle. The current matchmaker we have now is the opposite: it has no rules other than "grab players, push into battle," but that also means that it's popping battles that have lower-end single digit teams. Neither one is a perfect solution; what we have now is better than what we had in 1.6, but it's also got its issues.

It's not off the table to still adjust the minimum players per team the matchmaker tries to create, but again, it'd increase the wait times.

I live 5 miles from that crash site. The soil here is mostly sand. You hit water at about 3 feet down. No way they'll ever recover the bomb.

Hmmm...I wonder if the Dr.1 is like 262 of its time...or is it the equivalent of tier 10 of its time?

Protected MM will wreck the already low population into oblivion. Without large population like Warships it's not gonna happen...unless WG wants the 1.6 debacle to rerun all over again.

Even in Ships protected MM gave tiers 5 and 6 hell of a time to ascend due to getting to be bottom tiers a tad too often. without tier 4 to feed into their matchmaking, the only way to go was up.

WoWP makes a great jousting game...especially with the 262 and people busy in furballs...
I am deaf, silent, and fly with unrealistic controls. Do not count on me to carry - my back's already broken from overweight.

2 Qs:

Eye patches is for protecting night vision?

Did Canada refuse bombers flying over their territory? I kinda assumed flight over Canada was a given eh?

C'est magnifique, mais ce n'est pas le SerB.

Eye patches were to keep the pilots from going completely blind in the case a nuclear explosion happened at their twelve o'clock.

You don't assume in a crisis that even your closest friend will help you.  You have to assume you're on your own.

If you want to fly the Dr.1, download Rise of Flight.

All of Manfred von Richthofen's aircraft are modeled in that sim.

Be warned though, it's more of a sim and less arcade.

Note

Half of Richthofen's 80 claimed kills were made while flying either an Albatross D.II or an Albatross D.III.

Albatros D.II 23 kills

Albatros D.III 25 kills

Albatros D.V 8 kills

Fokker F.I  2 kills

Halberstadt D.II 6 Kills

Fokker DR.I 17 kills

DICTA BOELCKE for WoWP
    1. Try to secure the upper hand before attacking.
    2. Always continue with an attack you have begun
    3. Open fire only at close range, and then only when the opponent is squarely in your sights
    4. You should always try to keep your eye on your opponent, and never let yourself be deceived by ruses
    5. In any type of attack, it is essential to assail your opponent from behind
    6. If your opponent dives on you, do not try run away from his attack, but fly to meet it
    7. When over the enemy's lines, always remember your own line of retreat
    8. It is better to attack in groups of four or six. Avoid two aircraft attacking the same opponent
