The real selling point for me was the 6 skill pilot. I love cannons on the mustang( always wondered why the US didn't use them much).
Respectfully
US used MGs for a variety of reasons.
- US fighters were designed as escorts primarily rather than interceptors
- US targets in Europe had inline engines mostly where 1 hit could disable it so more lead in air was better
- US targets in Asia were flimsy without armor or self-sealing fuel tanks so more lead in air was better
- US rotated it's pilots so there was a constant supply of well trained inexperienced pilots so spraying was better than precise aim
- License built Hispano cannons in the US were notoriously unreliable
- US fighters did not escort bombers all the way to the target, they did it in waves, swapping off along the route. Once their escort duties were complete, they were free to engage targets of opportunity. The Browning was better for this general purpose use and cheaper ammo
- US wasn't shooting down medium or heavy bombers.
