I thought a 'So how do you start this Westwall thing?' thread deserved a sister topic, on how- if at all- to climb Westwall to victory and 2 new planes.

Any ideas? What planes work best? What tactics? How to outwit Persha's finest contest craftsmen? (it's cheating to wait until the event is over to pick the machines up at a post-event sale)

So how are the pros going about it? Come on, you 1.9 aces- those gallant few who are left post 2.0- pray show/tell us how to go about it?

Let's stop whinging and whining and show Persha what we're all made of (aside from $s that is)!

Never play GA or bombers because those always get attacking.

In my last defensive battle, there were 5 enemy fighters up against our 15 fighters plus the 4 air defense fighters each zone got. Just imagine how much of a turkey shoot it is for 19 fighters to take out 5 fighters.

Just had a game where we had two fighters but we almost won. So far I just play the game like any other day, seem to be advancing along well enough.

Not sure Westwall is winnable, I'm stuck on Air Defense Penetration, pretty tough to complete the mission when I am on the defending side pretty much every time. Have to say for my first time posting on these forums about this poorly thought out mission by WG convinces me to not spend any actual cash on this game.

Pro Tip: Watch my Twitch streams.  I'm streaming every night of the event, showing best planes to complete missions, flighting up with people... getting it done.

1. Stop dying because of limited respawns or "sorties" and the fact that they are SHARED throughout your team

2. Gang up on lone enemy whatever be it GA, Bombers, LFs etc.

3. Don't go alone

4. Keep an eye on the map at all times due to people ninja'ing caps

5. Don't chase zooming planes, return to the sector always

6. Kill those GAs for cap points! They're clear fodder for invasion - poor GAs ;(

7. Clear tails!

If you're attacking:

7. Spread out in groups, make sure atleast a GA or a bomber is with you

8. Ninja dem caps! Take a lowbie sector like garrisons while the enemy is busy at that stronghold or airstrip (there's a pattern there) for the extra time bump

9. Numbers 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 from top apply here too

10. Regroup - don't go rushing in one by one (gotta watch dat map yo) - this will help against a strong defending team

11. Take opportunities - they will present themselves in the match when you observe the map (just press TAB - i know its painful but its the only way to see "everything") like low health sectors, or a few blue teammates in one sector enough to capture it, or if the majority of the enemy force is leaving that one sector all by its lonesome defenseless... etc.

All that in just under 20 battles :B

Lol I kid. One thing is for certain though. The defending team has it easy because they need not worry about taking sectors and only kill planes. The attacking side however... they have it rough. But granted I have seen attacking teams turn it around with some good grouping tactics (they don't even realize they're doing it too but I see it happening in the map) and ninja'ing the right sectors at the right time. Not sure how much time you get boosted for taking out sectors but I have seen +90 when a stronghold is being taken. Not sure about the others.

Hope that helps. I may make a video about this in the later weeks just to explain its quirks. It may help some out. Or not. We'll see.

Play the mission, and don’t worry about winning.  Bombers and GAA are for separate missions, mostly the sector capture, capture pointe and personal points missions.  Fighters, heavy fighters and multirole fights are better at defending and getting aerial kills.  Know your mission, know your planes.

all great ideas...

and in war, attacking is generally harder to succeed than defending against attacks...    ultimate example: persians vs spartans at thermopylae

that's why we need to go to each cap in a giant group, like the persians did at thermopylae

pro tip:   before each battle begins, count the number of greek names on the other team and multiple by 300

One thing I learned is: when in doubt, go for points. I was in a match with Quesnel where our attacking team was running out of planes and the whole defending enemy team was over the last sector, an Airbase. Suddenly, I realized quite a few enemy aircraft were pretty beat up, so I decided to make a quick run into the furball and pick out any low-hp fighters I could spot. After one kill outside of the circle and two final attempts within the Airbase, we flipped the sector and claimed a victory with about over half of the enemy team alive and a handful of allied aircraft remaining. Good thing too, that attack put nearly every enemy fighter on my six

This is my IL-2 (t). There are many like it, but this one is mine. :child:

Don't waste your time on this. Go play anything else this new mode is terrible and yet another fail.

Attacking is broken off primetime when there's only 3 or 4 human players on, nothing but rout after rout. During the day when the teams were half or more players you were at a disadvantage but at least you weren't as much at the mercy of fickle bots.

1. realize that "winning" the reward planes is near impossible for the average player without spending real money to buy a bunch of certificates.

2 if you do decide to go for the missions, then go all out. If you get the one where you have to kill defense planes and you keep getting stuck on the defense side like I did (27 matches straight where I was stuck on the damn defense side), then just log out the moment the match starts and get into another plane.

3. Then when you realize that even this is a royal pain in the [edited] because the bots rather dogfight in the middle of the damn map instead of going for the bases, log out and go play something else til this stupid event ends.

How to win easy

1. be in a clan get your whole clan together join battles and coordinate attacks/defense using discord chat

2.realize your not good enough to complete the missions and just play.

3.Open your wallet and by the marathon certificates (this is most likely what this whole event is about)

This conflicted with the UK March of Nations event. I was trying to buy a Spitfire XIV on discount so spent the weekend above Westwall in a Spitfire IX (stock, couldn't spare the XP beyond Merlin 61 engine) chasing 90K XP. Not the plane I would have chosen for the event, but beggars can't be choosers. I wish I'd had a choice as to whether I wanted to participate in Westwall or the UK March of Nations in Conquest mode.

Small consolation, but with every string of losses I comfort myself with the thought that somewhere some other fool pilot is getting closer to being strapped into a Pfeil in early 1945. Good luck with that (I ran into a few, they didn't seem so formidable).

Surely not very charitable to the rest of your team?

Sorry but when you only have so many hours to try and get the missions completed, the team doesn't mean crap. I was playing their event and had no choice to try and get things done before time expired.

Now I'm debating if I will do this every time this new stupid map mode comes up.

LoL, I hear you brother. The same thought crossed my mind yesterday as I revved up my IL-2 GAA. Looking at the (human) roster I had a Japanese Zero escort versus 2 human FW 190s on the other side. Could get rough I thought. So did my escort pilot, and baled before you could say- or click- battle. To cut a long story short, it doesn't take long for 2 FWs to find and take apart an IL-2. Over and over...

One (the only?) good thing about this new game mode is that the battles can be (mercifully) shorter...

Winning is easy.  Get put on the defending side every time.  Defending is so much easier than attacking it is a joke.
