I played a little WT air combat, and wasn't all the impressed.

I played WT quite a bit but I disliked the Arcade mechanics (landing to capture airfields!?) and the practice of having to select a lineup of airplanes to respawn in instead of being able to respawn in the same airplane. You put in less time per airplane and this its harder to learn individual airplanes or to grind up a particular line.

But a truce to this mournful story

For death is a distant friend

So here's to a life of glory

And a laurel to crown each end

That's a neat video you posted. I've tried both games and while there are features I like about WT, I still prefer WoWP(pre & post 2.0) overall.

i hadn't thought of that, but you're right...  here, we get to go back out in the exact same plane, with the same countdown for bombs and everything

nevertheless, i enjoyed planes in WT, but def not that voiceover guy's constant haranguing

like wowp for game play and like wt for performance...which sadly is one of the reason people are not coming to wowp....Lack of optimization after so many years as well as prolonged bugs making chat messed up, stat server broken, and the game crashing every 45 minutes is just inexcusable and should warrant some terminations.

I tried it and didn't like the "feel" of the controls.  To each his own...

I didnt watch the vid, but essentially WT vs WOWP is like apples vs oranges.

WT is made for more the simulator enthusiast, WOWP is arcade.

I will say this, WT is a much more polished game in terms of graphics and performance.

Controlling an arcade game with a joystick doesn't make it a simulator.  Still very much arcade.

The same as playing a flight sim is different from flying a real plane.

I had that green name tag, once upon a time, back when hope was strong for the game and before tadaah displaced hathore (and dropped a Stupid Bomb on the community).  I was fond of the tag though.

As for this topic:  wt =75 fps, the max refresh rate of my laptop screen (so, locked to 75 fps by gsync), wowp= 15 to 50 fps.

Bad engine, bad code, bad optimization, or whatever, it's a huge difference in playability.  The fact that there are such huge spikes and dips in fps hampers tracking a target and maintaining a lead is needlessly difficult.

Wowp also looks fake when you consider how barren the terrain is how few ground objects and how all ground objects  (and even ai bombers) are scaled down in size to supposedly increas our "sense of speed".

Controls feel similar on arcade mode, but the simulated joystick mode in wt is unusable.  That's one of the main reasons I don't fly in that game. I prefer their tank gameplay, but use realistic mode whish requires the terrible mouse controls instead of usable mouse controls.

The other reason I prefer wowp is that you can get in and go.  Oh, and you don't have to research 3 versions of the same plane, plus some others that you aren't interested in, to progress: wt tech tree progression sucks.

huh..odd...wt runs at about 30 but wowp runs about 50-60

At least WT isn't crashing every 10 minutes and no chat...  and one has to love the frame rate issues with 2.0 forward.

WT is unplayable for joystick users.

Which is ironic considering it's supposedly more "realistic".

Not only does it take several days to setup your joystick, it's impossible to aim and hit anything with it, and you have to fly with the tight parameters of your plane or you send yourself into an unrecoverable stall. All the meanwhile, mouse users don't have to worry about any of these problems. The "instructor" flies the plane even more for you than with WOWP.

Even the famed, "realistic" battles that WT has isn't all that more realistic than [what] WOWP [used to be]. Sure it has more mechanics, but your telling me my pilot hasn't blacked out after 6Gs?

WT arcade planes has a much higher skill ceiling for air to air combat, but on the downside it has a terrible objectives meta where air to air combat is relatively unimportant compared to killing AI controlled ground units.

In WoWP at least skill contributes heavily to wins; in WT winrate is primarily determined by willingness to spam planes loaded with bombs at the ground target objectives.
