I use a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro and I have it set up as follows.

J1- Fire with weapon group 1.

J2-Fire with weapon group 2.

J3-Lock nearest target.

J4-Snap to target.

J5-Launch rocket.

J6-Drop bomb / Launch extra rocket.

J7-Extend flaps.

J8-Consumable 1.

J9-Apply air brake.

J10-Consumable 2.

J11-Activate boost.

J12-Consumable 3.

Hatswitch foreward-weapons groups 3.

 Left hand looks after aircraft. Right hand looks after targets and gunnery.

 By useing seperate weapons groups instead of the "Fire" button, you can double your time before the guns overheat.(In some cases triple the time) ie. P39N.

 The throttle is kept all the way foreward with no thrust. Thrust and air brake are at J11 and J9.

 I don't use sniper mode as I find it distracting.

I hope someone gets a little benefit from this as it took 14 months and 2 joysticks to get to this point. (LOL)

Thanks for the info.  Interesting about the Weapons Groups, have wondered why that would be useful.  I use J2 for Sniper View (while button pressed); indispensable for me when targeting with GAA.   Makes it easy to zoom in with just a squeeze of my thumb when I want it.

 

J1 - Guns

J2 - Sniper View (while button pressed)

J3 - Rockets

J4 - Bombs

J5 - Flaps (while button pressed)

J6 - Bomb View

Throttle - No Boost (Keyboard "W" is Boost)

Other buttons are set, but they are also bound to my Tartarus keypad.

 

I also use a Razer Tartarus for my left hand that gives me another 17 buttons + hat switch.  That is where I have Flaps, Free Camera (move my hand from stick to mouse for a quick sweep around),  menu, consumables, and other settings.

Thanks for sharing.  My set-up is somewhat similar and I find this works pretty well for me.  But always looking for improvements.

 

J1-Fire.

J2-Drop Bomb/Fire Extra Rocket.  (I first tried "Sniper Mode" in J2 but found when attacking could activate J8 with better timing with my with my left hand.)

J3-Fire Rocket. (for those who like to make head-on passes at GAA)

J4-Lock Nearest Target. (use a lot in combination with J12)

J5-Switch to Bombing Mode. (click to activate)

J6-Lock Target in Screen Center.

J7-Extend flaps.  (while pressed only)

J8-Switch to Sniper Mode.  (while pressed only)

J9- Consumable 1.  Primary one.  For others, I press keyboard to activate.

J10-Air Brake (while pressed only)

J11-Show Team Panels (keyboard “Tab”). Use frequently to see “big” picture.

J12-Alternate Interface Mode (keyboard “Lalt”).  First to “ID” planes (type, Air Defense, etc.).  Click again to get distance.  Getting closer (attacking) or leaving (I can turn and attack).  I flip between modes frequently.

Two of my friends use this same stick. I've had one for -ages- now but rarely use it.  One friend kicks much [edited]with it. I'm still a Mouse flier.

Interesting configuration. I prefer to use a more minimalist setup.

J1_ Fire all wepons (overheating is not a problem if you know how to manage the shots + more fire power).

J5_ Drop bombs / rockets.

J6_ Look target in screen center.

J3_ Look nearest target.

J2_ Switch to Sniper mode (I use it all the time, in my case it allows me to have more precision).

J4_ Snap to target.

Hatswitch_ Rear view.

 

For the consumables, speed manage and flaps i use the keyboard. I put the joystick to my right (not in front of me) and the keyboard to my left.

Settings pre-2.0 (The game was a lot different then)

 

Changes from pre-2.0 settings:

2. Lock Nearest Target

7. Lock Dangerous Enemy

10. Switch to Turret Control Mode

11. Snap to Target (If I flew bombers regularly, I would keep this set to "Switch to Bombing Mode")

 

I'm with Hannibal on the fire button. If the trigger were split, I would map the guns separately. Shooting for me is intuitively bound to a trigger.

I also fly with a 1st person only camera mod for complete immersion.

Technically, yes and no on the more fire power.

Separate fire groups - Full fire for 4 secs, shoot each caliber as they come of cool down.

So with the math, you will get more DPS with separate fire groups.

 

Now this is if you actually get a full 20 secs to shoot your guns at 1 target.  We all know that most of the time you be lucky to get 3-4 secs on an evasive target.

 

Separating the Fire Groups also lets you shoot the weapons that are only required for that range.  For example with the 109E 7.62 mm is 440 m, 20 mm is 600 m, 15 mm is 620 m for full damage. but up to 775 the 15 mm will still do under 80 damage per sec.  So if a plane is 700 m away why force heat on the 7.62 mm and 20 mm when you do not need to.

Also if any one is curious here is my layout:

 

Then I use Voice Attack for these by saying these commands:

Bombs = Switch to Bomb view

Danger = Lock Dangerous Enemy

Near = Lock Nearest Target

Engine = Engine Restarter Consumable (always on my Consumable 1)

Fire = Fire Extinguisher Consumable (always on my Consumable 3) 

(Consumable 2 slots is a mixture of these depending what I slot it with)
First Aid = First Aid Consumable

Wing = Control Surface Trim Consumable

Controls = Reinforced Control Surfaces Consumable

Boost = Engine Cooling Consumable

Tail Gunner = Switch to Tail Gunner Mode

Weapon = Weapons Ventilation Consumable

Sector = Attacking/Defending Sector (F2)

Support = Need Support (F3)

Aircraft = Attacking/Defending Aircraft (F4)

Roger That = Roger (F5)

Negative = Negative (F6)

Help Me = Clear My Tail! (F7)

Good Job = Good Job! (F8)

This is very good info, but honestly, if I wanted to think that much I'd play a real sim.

The guns are just like microwave popcorn: stop when the popping becomes less frequent & don't leave them unattended.
