does any one know where I can find the nose art dds files for the A6M1 and A6M2? I would like to edit them so the nose art does not go past the cowling but I don't know where to find the nose art dds files.

All nose art are found here:

res\shared_content_aircrafts.pkg
once you open the pkg with a zip reader then it is located \vehicles\airplanes\common\decals\decoration\byPlane

Actually, you can change the extension .pkg to a .zip and extract it that way. It doesn't break the contents or anything.

I found them but when I open them in gimp I just get a white rectangle in the left side of the image.

Or create a file association. Right click on any .pkg file and change 'Opens with' to your particular ZIP file reader (7-Zip say).

Don't use GIMP, but Irfanview works. As above, change file association if you wish so Irfanview reads.

I've gotten that all down, now how does one get it to show up in game? simply putting the file tree in the res mods folder does not work.

You have to have it in the correct file order and it needs to be in 2.0.1.0 not 2.0.1.1 folder.  The paths.xml file is setup to read mods still from the 2.0.1.0 even though they added the 2.0.1.1 at 2.0.1.1 patch.

So file structure should be: res_mods\2.0.1.0\vehicles\airplanes\common\decals\decoration\byPlane and the rest of the folders where the file you are editing comes from.
