The spreadsheet was created in November of 2017. It is now June of 2020. Is this information still valid or is it now obsolete?

I would say, it never really mattered.  It gave you a sense of setting up your plane when they made all the big changes for specialist, but noting in the spreadsheet is any sort of secret or formula to make any plane OP.

I have always just used a general keep my plane safe approach to equipment, with the odd help make it accurate when it has cannons.

The info in the spreadsheet is just one way of doing things. It seems rather outdated, especially considering that it doesn't seem to take into account the different amounts and types of equipment slots available now. For example, the P-43 can't mount engine equipment, but the spreadsheet has engine tuning listed. A lot of the more recent bombers are not included on the spreadsheet. Also, the creators of the spreadsheet seem to favor spreading out your build instead of making it good at one thing. By this I mean, they often include gear/skills for speed, turning, armor, and guns all in the same build instead of focusing on just one or two of those four things. I'd say the spreadsheet is outdated and really isn't that helpful at this date and probably wasn't all the helpful to begin with since it steers people towards building one kind of build. You should experiment and see what works for you.
