The Lockheed P-38F is truly a sublime aircraft to fly.  Her pilots historically considered her to be one of the best aircraft in WWII; a screaming deadly Cadillac of the skies, and this feeling is replicated here in Warplanes.  In the transition to 2.0 the Lightning retained a lot of the qualities that made her so much fun to fly from the time the American heavy line was introduced.  She's fast, has powerful accurate guns, and is very agile for a heavy fighter.  Her natural prey are slower less agile aircraft; meaning that she should prioritize eliminating enemy heavy fighters and bombers, a task for which she is well suited with her high altitude performance and agility that is retained even when operating in the red for altitude.

If there are none of these targets available, the Lightning is also quite capable of taking down light fighters; her cluster of four 50 cal MGs around a single cannon offers very accurate and high damage fire.  If universal MG ammo belts are used she quite often leaves a light or multirole fighter crippled and on fire if she doesn't destroy it outright.  The P-38s speed differential between her own ability and those of her targets is so great that she is difficult to engage in response if the 38's pilot maintains speed and manages energy efficiently.  She becomes an even harder target if a pair of these twin engine monsters are flighted up as wingmen and working together to eliminate targets and cover each other's tails.

The rest of the American heavy line tries to adhere to these general rules, though the path gets bumpy along the way to tier X.

Good hunting!  :honoring:

You're welcome, everyone.  I'll keep 'em coming!  I have an entire library of guides that need updating now.  :D

Great video.  Been a fan of your work, both on YouTube and in the sky, for years.

Also, linguistic peculiarity: The german phrase is "Gabelschwanz Teufel."  "Schwanz" is the word that means "tail," but it is also sometimes used in a euphemistic way to refer to... reproductive anatomy.  You may draw your own conclusions about possible double entendres that may or may not have been intended by German pilots when they came up with that nickname.

I can't stand 18 minutes of poorly-structured, long-winded "guide" trying to find bits of useful information.

Then you won't find what you're looking for here.

Or, you could rephrase and ask what it is you're trying to find out.

Need to watch this vid tomorrow.  Just had 6 losses in a row in the P38 tier 5.  Even though this is my highest xp and combat points plane at tier 5.  Maybe it was just bad luck.  Getting capped out hard and trying to do something about makes me mess up and lose my energy and then I get swarmed.  This plane would be fun in a more realistic game mode.  I don't feel I have the skills right now to play it effectively in Conquest mode.  I'm not doing something right.

I'll be back...

I get the same thing in games where there aren't enough other human players, where the bots just cannot cap fast enough by shooting down defense fighters or taking out ground targets.

I may have to switch back to the rockets versus the bombs; the latter do more damage but the plane carries enough of the former to finish off more structures being left at only partial destruction.

I'll be back...

i instinctively try to fly it like a german or UK heavy, and i get wedgied in it every time i fly it

it flies like nothing like anything else that i currently own, and i'm ashamed to admit that i may never 'get' it

which just kills me, because it's so effing beautiful in flight

sending yet another embarrassing personal request out to the ether:   i will pay you a respectable bag of gold for p-38f lessons...  it's just that important to me

if you fly mornings to early afternoons EST mon-friday, please pm me

absolutely no guarantees of my current or future success required, just some in-flight headset wingman pro tips?

Add me to your contacts, Trikke.

If you catch me online, I'll see if I can provide some wingman demonstration for you.

Well, you would have an idea of how long I've been here and doing this.

Thanks, Spittoon.  :B

You have a point Tablecat. But lets not dismiss him out of hat. His info is both concise and useful. Its the Delivery that is lacking.

If i had a nit pick it would be the number of times that Magus inserts an "uuh" or a weird  lips smacking/teethsucking sound in almost every sentence when speaking.
I lost count before two minutes in.
Between the 'Uhs' and my brain Noticing the uhs instead of listening to the content  It seemed to take up a full minute or more from the 8 minute theory-crafting lecture.
This subliminal (until its pointed out) disjointedness is most likely the source of the "poor structure and longwinded" feel that Tablecat noticed.

So i dont sound hyperbolic i went back over it and counted it out.

To his credit its a difficult skill to pick up. Most of us arent even aware of it.
Professional radio speakers/Talking Heads on the TV  (especially new ones) still need to have the concept drilled into their skulls by their producers.
Even in a business where dead air is a great sin; it is deemed better to have a silence linger than fill it with a random sound or stutter.

Ok, enough of the Stick. Here is the Carrot.

Over all this is good stuff.
Solid info. And a Good Display of the vehicle capabilities.

Spoiler

Magus has a real voice for radio. It just needs to get smoothed out.

With work It will Make for a very nice listening experience, indeed.
and with this come Page views. Lots of them.

Look at Jingles for WoT. He is absolutely a potato player. And will tell you as much.
Yet 500k~ish subscribers like hearing him talk about their favorite game(s) anyway.

Thanks for a post 2.0 demo on how to Boom&Zoom. Im doing better with my P-38 already.
You have my Sub and im looking forward to more post 2.0 updates

But he's right.  I'm very self aware of the noises I make as I speak, especially on a sensitive mic; it's one of the reasons I have a softer music track playing in the background while I'm lecturing.

To his point, I'm a polished public speaker, but my extemporaneous speech is afflicted with the midwestern accent curse.  That's where the uhhhs, hmmms and random mouth clicking comes from.  If I have a script, I don't do any of that...well, not on the scale I'll do in speaking from memory and free flowing thought like here.

That has got me to thinking, though.  I should go to script format and see how that changes things.

That has got to be one of the funniest posts I have read today :teethhappy:

Dw magus. It's not easy being an appealing & entertaining content creator. I think you're by far one of the best youtubers for wowp in this game's circle (from RU to NA). I agree with him that the delivery in speech and the skill to provide a well spoken commentary without coincidently making it long winded, is not as well presented in these videos. But I still appreciate the content within them and the amount of information given. Keep at it mate. You're doing better than most imo.

Well I do enjoy Magus vids.  I usually play the new ones in the background while I'm cooking dinner or whatever.  The fact that Magus gives a history lesson alongside game play is brilliant and addictive for an ADHD type like myself.

I listen to Twitch players and YouTubers and  I would Magus is among the most polished.

I would say Magus TC/VLiM is on the lower scale.  Coming at a .33.

Very acceptable and the Warplanes Scientific Institute has also reviewed his teeth clicks divided by video length in minutes and has decided it is in the normal broadcast range.

15 out of 21 dentists also recommend a more sugary grape drink to prevent tooth click and encourage cavities so they can pay off their new Tesla electric automobiles.
