Welcome to another addition of Warplane Wednesday, where I bring attention to rare, unique, or just left out aircraft not featured in the game currently, and give it the spotlight for all to talk about and enjoy.

This week is a British attacker that quickly went from fighter to sprinter, its the Lysander!

The Westland Lysander was a British army co-operation and liaison aircraft produced by Westland Aircraft used immediately before and during the Second World War. After becoming obsolete in the army co-operation role, the aircraft's exceptional short-field performance enabled clandestine missions using small, unprepared airstrips behind enemy lines to place or recover agents, particularly in occupied France with the help of the French Resistance. British army air co-operation aircraft were named after mythical or historical military leaders; in this case the Spartan general Lysander was chosen.

Aren't these the ones parked in WoT's Airfield?

WoWP makes a great jousting game...especially with the 262 and people busy in furballs...

I read somewhere about a mission where an intrepid Lysander pilot flew across the channel at night to pick up was briefed as two escapees, but he managed to get airborne and return to England with nine men crammed inside.

The author Jack Higgins writes about the Lysander in a couple of his novels. Interesting little aircraft. The Germans had their own light plane for officer transport/spotting/clandestine drop offs, the Fiesler Storch. The British used the Lysander and other such aircraft to get people in and out of occupied France. Some very interesting stories behind what are really little aircraft that you wouldn't think were that important.
