I've heard this story before. I think it was a Mighty Planes episode on the SR-71.

Classic!! :D:great:

I was at an airshow back in the early 80's, a USAF tanker base just north of LA California, can't remember the name of the base.    They pull out the SR71......flew it right over our heads.  Even my crappy camera was filled up by field of view with mostly black, it was that low.  Pictures were not that great, black and fuzzy.

Then kicking after burners on a very cloudy day  (the reason it flew so low).  Rules were more lax back then.

To this day, one of the most amazing planes I ever seen in the air........

They have one of these along with its starting cart, etc. on display in a hangar at the Air Force Museum in Warner Robbins, GA.  That thing looks like its going 600mph while its sitting still!  Beautiful aircraft.

I live only 1 1/2 hours away from Warner Robbins, have lived here for 12 years, and STILL have not made the pilgrimage yet.

Perhaps when my current project is completed.....THIS I gotta see.

I would love to see an SR71 in person. Its such a beautifully designed aircraft. It has such an elegance to it.

They have on at the Strategic Air and Space Museum in Ashland, NE right in the entry way. It's right there in your face when you fist walk in the front door.

First one I seen was at the USAF Museum in Dayton Oh, they also have a YF-12 interceptor version of the Blackbird on display as well.

The Museum of Flight in Seattle has a very impressive SR-71, along with a lot of other wonderful planes, military and civilian. A must see for any WoWP player that is in the area.

As a teenager we used to drive up to Marysville, Ca. from Sacramento and park outside Beale AFB and watch the Blackbirds land and take off.

I got within 50 feet of one at Kadena AFB in Okinawa and then the security detail made it known we were too close. The plane was escorted out its hangar with two jeeps armed with M2's

Before they retired the Blackbird there were routine calls into the local sheriff's office about bright lights and streaks of fire in the sky.  Not soon after their retirement they all but stopped.
