Hello Pilots!

Today is the birthday of Sergey Ilyushin. He was born in a small village and had many siblings. He did not have much schooling and was largely self-taught. He came from a poor family, and worked many odd jobs. He found a job at the Kolomyazhsky Racetrack as a groundskeeper, and it was at this site where the Russian festival of Ballooning was held. During that time he met many Russian aviators and that sparked his interest in Aviation.

It wasn't until WWI when he was conscripted into the Imperial Russian Army that he was able to work with aircraft. In the beginning, he was part of the infantry, but a time came when they needed 7 volunteers for the aviation section of the Army. He was one of the lucky seven. It was there that he was able to work on Aircraft as a mechanic, and became qualified as a Pilot in 1917.

Fast forward a few years later, in 1922 Ilyushin left military service and entered the Institute of Engineers of the Red Air Fleet where he mainly focused on glider design and took part in many design competitions. After he got his degree he began designing aircraft at The Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute (TsAGI) along with Nikolai Nikolaevich Polikarpov and Andrei Tupolev.

In 1933, Ilyushin became chief of TsKB at Moscow plant. Later becoming Ilyushin Design Bureau. Ilyushin went on to design a multitude of different planes, though he's best-known for the indomitable Ilyushin IL-2, the most-produced combat aircraft of WWII.

We have many discounts, and missions available to celebrate. Please see THIS news post for more information

I found a link to an Ilyushin Il-2 Papercraft model from papercraftsquare I haven't built it myself yet, but if anyone is interested HERE is the download link. If you build this model, post it in this thread!

you oughtta see it sometime, it's a sight. A big plane like a '52. VRROOM! There's jet exhaust, fryin' chickens in the barnyard.

Man that paper cut-out takes more than just skill, it would take the patience of a saint. had them printing out large format so i could make a good big one one, those white triangles are next to impossible to cut. If i don't get kicked out of the print-shop again for throwing the exact o knife across the room, I think i should have them cut out sometime in July. I might increase the size of the paper to 36in X 24in at least then the white things would be bigger.

The papercraft looks complex & my reading comprehension of Russian instructions is nil. But, there are pictures; so, I might try it at some point. Thanks for sharing the link.

How about some better IL-2 paper models in English? Here are a few of mine that I have gotten over the years. And they are free to download. :great:
