Beav said it best. Off the shelf PCs have integrated graphics, which share RAM with the CPU. I popped in an MSI GTX 650 graphics card, and increased my overall performance greatly.
By utilizing the 2 GB GPU RAM, it frees up more system RAM for the CPU.
I use the HD client, and play the game on Low Graphics settings, which gives me 30-40 FPS, which is sufficient for gameplay. Some maps are more resource intensive, so your mileage may vary.
However, if you look at my videos, you will see about 10 FPS +/-. This is because I change my graphics settings to Very High before recording replays with Bandicam, providing a higher quality video.
2 GB of onboard video RAM, on just about any graphics card will greatly improve your FPS. Experiment with different Graphics settings to tweak your performance. Having features like textures and shadows turned on can lower your FPS, and are not necessary for smooth gameplay.
