I've been taking my time moving through the tiers, trying to get a feel for the game and for many different planes, and I just got my first tier V plane, a Russian Mig-3.

When it comes to all those Russian plane options coming into tier V-VI, I was wondering what is your favorite and why? Thanks.

A tossup between La-5 and Yak-1M...

Never liked the MiG line, the LaGG-3 lost most of its appeal a long time ago, and the Yak-7 and 9 just won't hit.

The La-5 combines decent firepower in 3x20mms, horizontal/vertical maneuverability, speed, and durability, while the Yak-1M's excellent turning ability lets it keep its guns on target for longer time and shoot at them more accurately, even if they are slightly weaker than that of the La-5.

WoWP makes a great jousting game...especially with the 262 and people busy in furballs...
I am deaf, silent, and fly with unrealistic controls. Do not count on me to carry - my back's already broken from overweight.

My He 100 D-1 has fallen victim to the Yak-7's motorkanone on several occasions.  I absolutely HATE flying against that thing.  A single hit can destroy a fighter.

The mig 3 is great. It is a high altitude turn and burn plane. Meaning it will out turn any of the other high altitude planes of t5. It will not out turn the low altitude turn and burn planes. Use your speed and altitude against those planes. The t6 i-210 is not that good for tier 6. However the t7 i-220 is amazing. T8 and above move to a 37mm cannon and 23mm cannons. As long as you have decent ping you should be able to hit with the 37mm. It does take practice though. The 37mm shoots much slower and the reticle is an average of the 37mm cannons and whatever else you have on the plane. Just lead the site more for the 37mm. Also get directly behind them so you can get all guns to hit.

The yak light fighter line is great in lower tiers, especially the yak1m. The t7 yak 3 can be challenging as the altitude on the yak is not that great combined with the altitude advantage of t7's and t8's have on you. I'm assuming you have the i-16's which are fun little planes.

The yak multiroles such as the yak 5,7, 9, and 9u's are a blast. They are only out maneuvered by the light figher yaks and zero line. They have big cannons, so they will be hard to hit with until you get better with them. When you do hit with the 37mm or 45mm cannon, it is usually a 1 shot deal except on a ga plane. If you have decent ping, you should be able to hit with it with some practice. I used to suck with the big cannons, but after a good amount of practice I can hit a good amount with them. It puts a smile on your face when you one shot planes with them.

The la series is like a combination of the mig line and the yak line. It is a mid altitude plane and can out turn most planes. The spitfire line can ruin you if you don't pay attention to them. They run at the same altitude and can out turn the la series of the same tier for some tiers. Also the yaks and Japanese planes can out turn you. With the exception of t8. The La9 is the most maneuverable plane in that tier except the la11. I have the most fun in la series for Russian planes. The la160 is a sightly different beast, but when you get it down its fun.

yeah, it is one of my favorite mid tier planes. It was the plane that I learned how to hit with a big cannon. I miss how you used to be able to out fit the lagg3 with the 37 or do a light load out and the ability to put rockets on it.

La-5. Horrid stock. Amazing upgraded. Had 0 games with 8 kills. Then I got one in Ha-137, the next battle I decided to press my luck. Free XP'ed the second guns as Envioux said it was good upgraded. 8 kill battle. Switched back to SPAD. Another 8 kills. Haven't gotten more than 5 since, but it was a great streak.

Yak-1M. Only plane I sold because it was to good. 30 battles and 50 kills I believe it was? It was way way above my average, and I was convinced it was luck. I wanted one plane that looked above average, so I sold it to preserve my stats. I could do better now since bots to kill, but it would degrade them IMO. I run a Yak-9 I believe it is as a Yak-1M with 1 less 12.7. Horrid set up only brought about by my pride.

As for T5. I loved Mig-3 by the end, but it suuuuuuuucked stock. Yak-1 was great from stock to the end.

The (not so) amazing Chokai is back! And he's hit all his personal goals sans one! Seriously though, nice to be back, looks like he game is improving. I continue to try to recruit new people.

Fog- the yak 9 has a big 37mm cannon when fully upgraded. It's like a t6 lagg3-34 that can turn better for its tier.

Why do they call them Russian planes anyway ?

They should call them Slow and Low.

Heck if you Russian then you only die faster being the first one spotted.

Slow and low you get a chance for the rest of the team to kill some enemy.

oh trust me I know. I just prefer lighter armed better turning planes to derp gun planes. On the T7 I will probably use the upgrade, but it costs 20k or so experience on the T6- and it isn't even a cross over module for other planes. Would rather just use that xp to help get to the T7.

Just remember the Yak line is as susceptible to fires as the Japanese line.

Bots are extremely good with those derp guns because they are not susceptible to server lag, delays, and so on...that, or they just plain cheat.

Me? Those guns keep fire ghost rounds that only heat up and do nothing. Although, the Lagg-3 34 somewhat works for me just because it's still tier 5.

Yeah, you could always get it after you research the next plane in the line the yak 9u.

The topic is called incorrectly.

They are not russian planes, they are soviet planes. The difference is significant.

Mig-3 - Mikoyan and Gurevich. One Armenian, another Jew. russian here and does not smell.

Kinda splitting hairs between the political and the geographical. Kinda like calling US citizens "Americans", when technically, every person from Chile to Canada is American.

The US state and the state of the USSR - is it correct? Russia was one of the union republics. Mig-3 can be called Uzbek.

Only up as far as tier 6, and only in the La and IL lines. La-5 is fun as hell, everything the LaGG-3 wanted to be and isn't any more. Good low-mid altitude TNB fighter with enough boost to climb and stick to heavies trying to zoom up off the deck, and enough gun power to kill most things relatively quickly. IL-2(t) is an IL, with all the hilarity and sometimes frustration that comes from flying the whales.

LaGG-3 was terrible, and seems like the only dog in the tree so far, but it was an exercise in frustration most of the time, due to the low firepower. Yak-1 and MiG-3 are good. One's the best low-altitude TnB plane in its tier, the other is the best high-altitude TnB plane in its tier. Yak-7 is derpy, but hilarious when you manage to get that 37mm to hit.

For low tiers, all the Polikarpovs are amazing, with the exception of the I-17, which is mediocre by comparison. The early model really stands out, though, because it has everything: it's fast, ridiculously nimble (only out-turned by the A5M if I recall correctly, and it's much faster and has better guns than A5M, so just BnZ), has good firepower, and generally curbstomps every other plane in its tier 1v1.
