So you want surround sound and only have 1 set of speakers.  Well there is a way to do it if you have the right hardware.

What you NEED to have is first of all a sound system that supports it, and the semi special hardware.

1) sound card that supports "5.1 surround speakers" or "Quadraphonic"

2) a pair of speakers

3) a HDMI tv style monitor, or a computer monitor that has its own speakers

4) a patch cord, it must have two speaker style jacks one on each end, yes the one that plugs into your speaker output on your computer

5) an open line-in connection on your audio device, or on the front of your computer

I will add to this posting with a diagram and screenshots.

Now the steps to do it.

1) right click on the little volume speaker icon down by your clock.

2) click on recording devices, then right click on ANY of the recording devices that are there.

3) make sure that the selection for "show disabled devices" and "show disconnected devices" are checked.

4) now you should be able to see your "line in" recording device, highlight it by right clicking on it and go to "properties"

5) in the box that opens go to the "Listen" tab at the top

6) check the "listen to this device" box, and then open the selection bar under it, set the "playback through this device" to your HDMI monitor/television.

7) if that is not available then your monitor does not support it, or you need to install your video card sound drivers. Sorry but if you do not have this then you CAN NOT continue.

8) click on apply, then go to the "Levels" tab at the top.

9) i have mine set to 100%, but yours may need to be lessened if it crackles.

10) click on apply, then go to the "general" tab at the top.

11) in the name description at the top, i renamed mine to "line in - surround".

12) apply it and close the properties box.

13) click on apply on the sound properties box and then close it.

14) now you must go to your computers sound card properties, mine is located in the control panel, under the hardware and sound section.

15) there should something there for your sound card drivers, mine is the "Realtek HD Audio Manager"

16) if you do not see one then you MUST find your sound card program, If you cannot find it then you cannot continue.

17) find something about your "speaker configuration" that is where you need to be, set it to "5.1 surround speakers" or "Quadraphonic"

18) apply your changes and close the sound settings program.

19) now you will need the patch cord, get to the back of your computer and identify the "line-in" connection, plug in one end of the cord.

20) next you need to identify your surround output plug that you will be using, you may have more than one (rear, side, and center/sub-woofer)

21) plug the other end of the cord into the newly activated output

22) that is it

you WILL need to adjust you volume levels next

1) right click on the volume speaker by your clock and then select "open volume mixer"

2) you will probably start with your main set of speakers, it is probably fine where it is.

3) identify the little arrow next to the speaker volume slider and click it, if you do not have it then you must find where you can adjust your monitor volume.

4) click on your monitor, you may see more than two, you MUST pick the monitor volume.

5) turn it up to about 3/4 of the way to start, this IS your surround volume now.

6) make sure that your monitor/television is turned UP, mine is at 40%

7) done

Now when you go into battle, or watch a movie/video, you will hear it.

In battle you will now hear when your enemy is behind you, and when you are getting shot.

Enjoy, if you have questions please do not hesitate to ask.....

Nice writeup. I just duct tape the speakers to each ear. Wife looks at me funny though.
