04/1944 specification issued -- 1st generation of US Army Air Force jet bombers

-- North American XB-45 -- 4x Allison J35 --> medium-range; ordered into production 01/1947 --> B-45 Tornado

-- Consolidated-Vultee XB-46 -- 4x Allison J35 -- did not proceed

-- Boeing XB-47 -- 6x Allison J35 -- featured swept wings based on studies of successful German designs; "clearly superior"; first production order 09/1948 --> B-47 Stratofortress

-- Martin XB-48 -- 6x Allison J35 -- straight wings -- FF 06/1947; 2nd prototype FF 10/1948; further proposal as Martin Model 247 turboprop-powered declined.

-- Northrop YB-49 -- joined competition at a later time

 

02/1946 specification for ground-support aircraft to replace Douglas A-26 Invader

-- Martin XA-45 -- 2x TG-110 turboprop + 2x J33 -- proposed 04/01/1946; contract awarded 05/23/1946; Army Air Force becomes U.S. Air Force 09/18/1947; project redesignated to XB-51 06/05/1948 while in blueprint stage

-- Martin Model 234 XB-51 -- 3x J47 -- 8x20mm (N) -- up to 10,400 lbs -- revealed 09/04/1949; FF 10/28/1949; 2nd prototype FF 04/17/1950; rotating bomb mechanism later used on Martin (EE) B-57 Canberra.
