After the experience on the experimental aircraft “Caproni Campini C.C.2”, engineer Secondo Campini started developing several project to be shown at the “Stato Maggiore dell’Aeronautica”, basically projects with unusual technical solutions with regular propeller or jet engine. In both cases, the engines choosen to power propeller blades or compressors were air cooled piston engines.
One of those projects was a twin-engined heavy fighter, the so called CS.10.

The choice of twin engine configuration seemed obligatory in order to ensure enought power; the two Campini’s propulsion units were inclorporated into the wing thickness, both powered by a Daimler-Benz DB-605 V-12 cylinder 1475 hp piston engine in the fuselage (with compressor to compensate power loss). The two Campini’s thermojets were also provided of additional afterburners.
On 12 February 1942 several projects were officially presented to the ministry. There were three types of single seater fighter, with geometric characteristics, weight and performance nearly equal.
  • CS.8 - characterized by a rather backward cockpit, with reduced wingspan.
  • CS.9 -  with forward cockpit and central engine
  • CS.10 - with the cockpit in the middle position

The armament consisted of eight guns and cannons of different calibers, four of which were mounted in the wings. The payload of 1180 kg was divided into 550 kg for 750 liters of fuel, 370 kg for weapons and ammunitions, 150 kg for pilot, parachute and seat armor, 60 kg for radio and 50 kg for oil.
In the end, the traditional configuration was chosen (Campini Secondo CS.10 caccia 42). The fighter prototype was planned for delivery within one year, built in the Caproni industries for a price of 2.755.000 lire (Italian Lira of 1942), excluding engines and armament.

CS.9 and CS.8

The construction never started and the ministry had many doubts about the effectiveness of this propulsion system. The most controversial point was the compressors, which were supposed to restore power to the engine and also provide the thrust with the help of afterburners.

It is a not well known project, executed by one of the pioneers of jet flight. The choice of generating thrust by the power output from a piston engine classify this type of aircraft as "Termoreattore" (Thermojet).

How works the Campini Thermojet?

The original idea was of the engineer Henri Coanda and his Italian classmate Giovanni Battista Caproni. It is a jet engine that generates thrust with a series of compressors, traditional piston engine (radial or in-line), a combustion chamber and a nozzle discharge.
The piston engine sets in motion a compressor at various stages that compresses the air and the exhaust gases of the engine in the combustion chamber where it is inserted atomised fuel which is ignited causing an increase in pressure inside the nozzle discharge by passing through the convergent the flow the pressure energy is converted into speed and the momentum acquired by the flow is obtained by the generation of thrust. The engine in this configuration is primarily used to move a propeller and only in few extent for the compression of the flow by the compressor.
The Campini prototype (constructed with the help of Caproni) had an very large air intake and piston engine the moves intubated propellers. The air is pushed over the engine and runs through the entire fuselage, which in reality is only a big pipe. High pressure air arrives in the combustion chamber with afterburner which is essential to have the true increase of thrust compared with using only the propeller.

CS.10 engine configuration:

In a 1948 article, Secondo Campini explains how his reaction system is not different from those used in the late 40's. He argues that the only difference is in the system that sets off the compressor to start. In his project, this was by a conventional piston engine, because at that time "gas turbines" was not sufficiently known and not had a chance to use them.
