Ok, I've completed the first 10 battles in my newly acquired Bell P-39Q-15 Airacobra. I give this plane a solid "A" grade.

Here are some highlights:

  • 37 mm cannon is very effective but overheats quickly
  • Lacks energy, gutless engine
  • Great money-maker

First, that's a great start with this plane. Congrats.

With a wimpy engine and less than stellar maneuverability, what approach do you take with flying it? I assume it must be some form of BnZ? Maybe the maneuverability is better than I assume. Never owned one, but maybe should consider getting one myself.

Gotta be better than the XFL-1
***************Fail to Suck****************

I shall use my aircraft and my skill to slightly inconvenience mine enemies.

Med altitude Boom and Zoom do not pull nose too High on escape as it will cost you a lot of speed. Split S dives onto IL aim well you can wreck engine with one burst. Very good money maker.

I've only flown mine a couple times so far. It seems like a pretty solid plane.

Yep, Nihtwaco has the right of it. The P-39Q really isn't going to out run anything; you may be able to get some separation, but there just isn't enough speed+boost to get out of gun range. However, it does have a decent roll rate; not quite as good as the F4U or Yak line, but it's quick enough to buy yourself a lot of time if you have team mates that can help.

So, I would give a good B+ in terms of Evasion.

Another point of advice is to just stop firing once the 37 mm overheats, especially if you're behind something with a tail gunner. The 2x12.7 machine guns just don't do enough damage.

If you have to climb at a target or to escape, you're in trouble. I like the plane, but it's terrible at gaining altitude.
