I'm almost done researching all the modules for the Lagg-3 and have fallen hard for this plane.  My question is does this line continue to have the same gun configuration style as the Lagg and is it still competitive.

My current favorite configuration is running the 23mm nose cannon with all other upgrades including rockets.

The La-5 has up to 3 20mm cannons in the hub, the La 7 has similar or goes up to 3x23. The La-9 goes to 23mm cannons for sure.

If you haven't tried it, try out the 37mm with the 50 cals on the Lagg-3 , you might just like the derpability of it's 37mm... especially with HEI ammo. I run HEI ammo on all my 20mm+ Russian aircraft.

Same lol "what doesn't kill them in one shot is likely to set them on fire."

That's the last module I have left to research, about 2k xp left.  I've been running incendiary so far since I read that HEI damage decreases drastically at long range and my tendency to get trigger happy once that red circle lights up.

It's not that bad it's actually very solid damage and if you do the math with a slow firing cannon it can be as much as a 5% chance to set someone on fire per shot for some of these.

There is inaccuracy in what is mentioned (even by WG staff) and what is actual damage seems to do. I happen to do better damage at longer ranges with HEI than I do with HE and SCAP/AP/API

See I remember people saying it was "better at range then up close" cause it had to prime or something in the air but honestly I don't see any of it either.

It certainly is satisfying to get a good shot on someone... and see them limp off with flames erupting from their plane...

...and several seconds or what even seems like minutes later, you get the "Enemy Destroyed" alert.

And then on the Post Battle results page... you see... Damage: 297/320 - By Fire: 286

Or some such...

it's pretty funny, says I.

Well worth the extra Silver. =)

The Lavochkin line changes into all-cannon planes from tier 6 on...no more machine guns for you.

It still plays pretty much the same, only that need to get used to the fact that you don't have any more machine guns to spray (but the B-20 overheats at an acceptable rate). It is the happy medium between the Yak-1/3 (firepower off, more mobility), and Yak-7/9 (Mobility off, bigger gun)...in the props age, at least.

La 5 is unkillable. That plane can move and roll around like none other, and it doesn't bleed energy as bad as the yaks. I don't know what it is, but I've done really good in it so far and its one of my favorites.

Funny. Until the 3 cannons, the La-5 was horrible for me. Now that 3 cannons have been reached, its fine (I did not mean how it handled, it handles fantastic). The Yak 1-M is great from the get go. It all depends on style I suppose. The 1-M is like a scooter that really doesn't go very high in altitude but is almost like a Zero in maneuverability.  The La-5 goes higher, turns almost as well and is "slippery" to pin down. It does not seem at all like the LaGG 3 to me. I do like it upgraded. The LaGG-3 is so adaptable its crazy. I liked the 23mm in the hub the best since it allowed some more turn ability than the 37. It was kind of like an anti-tank rifle flying around!

The ShVAK is the very basic cannon you get in the Russian line. While it is good compared to its contemporaries back in tier 4, by tier 6 it begins to phase out of greatness, and you get only two of those compared to the 3 B-20 cannons. 3 cannons increase the volume of fire to an acceptable amount and on top of that it is actually lighter than 2 ShVAK.

I hold the same sentiment regarding the La-5, actually. I forgo the engine for the B-20, and it worked.

I got six kills in a La 5 stock. Agreed though, the Lagg 3 is a plane of it's own. The La's and I-16's aren't like it.
