Fastest aircraft known to have flown with piston engines (as of 1999, according to Bill Gunston):

Dornier Do 335 V8 479 771
Grumman F8F Bearcat, modified by Darryl F. Greenamyer 482.46 776.44
de Havilland DH.103 Hornet prototype (RR915) 485 780.5
Hawker Fury LA610 ~485 ~780.5
Republic XP-72, designed for 520mph 490 789
Supermarine Spiteful XVI, in combat trim 494 795

North American P-51 Mustang, modified by Frank Taylor 517.06 832.13 07/30/1983
Pond Racer, designed for 535 mph, flown 1991     no record as of 1998
Montagne Mach-Buster, designed to exceed Mach 1     not yet completed
Napier-Heston racer, designed (1939) for 520mph (FF 06/1940)     replica planned

This is just to verify that a fighter derived from the Bugatti 100P racer, presumably designed for 500-550 mph (805-885 mk/h), would be appropriate for Tier VIII, as aircraft already in-game

Given the introduction of Update 2.1 and the folding of France into a combined Europe tab, this project is now reduced to simple premium speculation.

It's really kind of sad that only a handful of French aircraft have thus far found their way in game.

If you had to pick just one more to get in game, what would it be?  For me, probably Dewoitine D.520, for the historical and what-if aspect.

The fact that France has been folded into a "Pan" placeholder tech tree is positively criminal. No their Armee de l'Air didn't get to do a lot in the game's time period and a lot of the aircraft that would be put into the higher tiers weren't battle tested, but that hasn't stopped France from standing on its own as an independent tech tree in both Tanks AND Warships. Plus for the limited time that they had to fight from French soil with French aircraft, French aviators pulled off an impressive kill/death ratio compared to both the Germans and the other Allies. The planes they had in 1940 may have been underpowered at best, but they were punching well above their weight class.

I really hope that one day that decision gets reversed and we get a proper French tree, and an Italian one as well so that at least the seven largest powers in the war get represented properly.
