As you should know by now, this day, the first of April in the year of two-thousand and fourteen, the World of Warplanes domain has seen a most unusual invasion.

Saucer spotted, among other oddities

The Sleipnir flying saucer, or Kampfflugplatte Sleipnir I as it is officially known, is an unconventional aircraft on-loan from the Asgard forces in an alternate dimension. It bears a V7 Graviton drive that keeps it aloft and maintains forward momentum, while a rotating disk is used to turn the craft through gyroscopic momentum. The saucer also bears a Gungnir Mk. 40 at the top of its crew compartment, which gives the craft considerable offensive fire power.

The Sleipnir easily fills the standard hangar.

Sleipnir Statistics

Compared to the planes native to this universe, the Sleipnir is certainly unusual. At a glance, it is not maneuverable and loses speed quickly in a climb, but when pushing the Graviton drive into emergency power, it shoots up like a rocket, easily accelerating, even when at excess of seventy degrees from horizon. Due to the odd propulsion unit, the saucer performs quite well at high altitudes as well, maxing out around 4000 meters of altitude. The emergency power also shows on the horizontal plane as well, as the Sleipnir is capable of reaching its 600km/h top speed in mere moments when boosted.

The Gungnir laser array is also quite impressive, with an exceptional fire rate and near-instant gun-to-target shot speed. However, due to dispersion in the air, the beam fades rather fast leaving it with an effective range similar to light machine guns. (~700meters) Due to the nature of the beam, it mostly ignores armor, making it effective against all aircraft, with the added benefit of easily setting aircraft on fire. However, it shows little effect on ground targets.

Firing the Gungnir

The great weakness of the craft is its sheer size - it is an easy target, especially for gound-based anti-air crews. With armor stretched thin over is bulky disk, the Sleipnir is susceptible to any caliber of round, and is quickly taken down by concentrated AA fire. This bulk also works against it in the field of maneuverability, with fighters of all nationalities capable of out-turning the saucer. - the primary cause for this apparent clumsiness is the regular shape of the design, as a lack of ailerons results in a miserable roll rate.

One feature the Sleinpir does have that could be used to outmaneuver foes however is once again do to its Graviton drive - due to the drive's ability to provide lift at very low powers, the saucer has a "stall" speed at a mere 40kmh - or 25 miles per hour - a speed that no other plane can match and expect to stay in the air.

Pros - boost, fire rate, shot speed, altitude performance, low stall speed

Cons - low agility, moderate range, poor climb without boost, immense size, poor armor

At the moment, there is only one visual option for the craft - a "winterized" camo pattern.

Of note are a pair of medals associated with the craft - Sleipnir Rider: awarded for piloting the craft in one battle - and Wrath of Odin: awarded for shooting down an enemy Sleipnir.

There is also one mission associated with the craft that award emblems to the craft that earned them: On the Heels of Sleipnir, awarding a small emblem of a UFO for a victory while finishing in the top five exp earners of your team.

P-40 sporting new emblem

Personally, I find the Sleipnir an odd bird to fly - the "gun" is amazing, by far being the best bullet-hose ever. the airframe is not the best however, turning about like a P-40 with rockets - but it does have excellent altitude performance. Flying it, play BnZ, but fighting against it, never try to follow a boosting Sleipnir. Also, when flying one, never EVER go after ground targets. The laser is not effective enough, despite its incendiary properties, and the Sleipnir is quickly shredded by AA fire.

If you find more relating to the Sleipnir you'd like to mention, please do! Stories of flying/shooting down the flying plates? I'll take those too! Tips or tricks for flying or combating them? By all means!

I'll try to get some better shots on maximum settings later, as I typically run with lower settings.

Karl in tanks is allegedly staying until April 3rd. So the UFO will most likely stay that same duration.

Here's hoping. I won't get much flying time today, myself.

The Sleipnir got an excellent braking power in addition to the energency power as well.

I can brake from 500kph down to 200kph almost instantaneously to shoot an Ilyushin...

Hey Mugsy!  Please let us keep flying the saucer for a few days.  I hope Crayola's right because today is one of the few days I won't be able to fly.  Ak ak!!

I believe at the start of each battle we should hear Mugsy or someone else yelling "PULL" in every Space Dish game. :D

To the write up, I'd like to add:

40 km/h stall speed with stall resulting only in a fast "nose" drop.

Terrible roll rate.

If you think it doesn't turn then try full rudder.

I mean yeah it would be sick to keep the sleepy's but after a while it would kiiinda ruin the whole ww2 vibe to have a UFO come blimping along out of the clouds.  I know warplanes isn't the most realistic game but give them a little credit.

Truth. I do much prefer real planes - or realistic at the least - but I still like entertaining the idea of pulling this out in two years and throwing a bunch of newbies for a loop.

Just replace 1st with 4th and it's still relevant.

Dear lord, yes. Powerful rudder, but flying with rudder as the primary control surface is a lot harder than it sounds.

Hitting the rudder literally spins it.

Useful tip...

And another question: Can this thing even stall?

Apparently, yes. Although the stall effect is minor, and the stall speed is so low, you could run to the kitchen and grab a drink without worrying about a crash.

As for rudder, just like the boost and 0% engine acceleration, the effect is instant and drastic. The broad, spinning arcs may be good for evasion, but do little to bring a target under your laser - unless you are a far better pilot than I. (Though it's pretty easy to be so.)

I can basically idle all the way and shoot an Ilyushin flying straight with impunity.

...and this thing kills with fire, not lazer...
